Tom Ford isn’t afraid to share his thoughts on the state of the Met Gala.
Although he was decked out to honor the “gilded glamour” dress code in a classic tux with tails on the Met Gala 2022 red carpet, the designer made sure to point out to Vogue’s Hamish Bowles that he doesn’t “really do themes.”
When Ford — who is one of the 2022 Met Gala co-chairs and even curated a section of the exhibit — was asked if it was important for him to stick to the gala’s theme, he demurred.
Adding that he was dressed appropriate to the time period, Ford said he wasn’t a big theme person, which should come as no surprise after his recent comments regarding the Met Gala turning “into a costume party.”
Along with sharing his anti-theme stance, the designer threw some subtle shade against some of the more outrageously dressed attendees saying, “I prefer quite simple and chic.”
“I make pretty simple, classic, chic evening clothes, and hopefully, things go well when we dress people,” he said of conceptualizing looks for the celebs he dressed for the event.
Indeed, Ford has some strong opinions on the evolution of The Costume Institute’s annual benefit that were revealed via an excerpt from Amy Odell’s forthcoming book, “Anna: The Biography.”

The fashion designer said the Met Gala “used to just be very chic people wearing very beautiful clothes going to an exhibition about the 18th century.”
“You didn’t have to look like the 18th century, you didn’t have to dress like a hamburger, you didn’t have to arrive in a van where you were standing up because you couldn’t sit down because you wore a chandelier.”
