BREAKING NEWS: Tiger Woods is BACK and will play at next week’s Genesis Invitational – seven months after his last appearance – ahead of The Masters at Augusta in April

Tiger Woods is playing the Genesis Invitational next week, his first tournament since The British Open last July.

The 47-year-old, a 15-time major winner, is playing for the first time in seven months in what appears to be an effort to find some form ahead of The Masters at the beginning of April.

The PGA Tour confirmed the news on Friday and Woods himself tweeted: ‘I’m finally ready to play an ACTUAL PGA Tour event next week.’

Last year, Woods finished 47th at Augusta, playing through the pain barrier after a serious car accident in February 2021 that still impacts his ability to walk.

Woods was also diagnosed with plantar fasciitis last year, a foot issue that causes pain in the heel and arch of the foot.

‘The plantar fasciitis is no fun, and now I get to truly recover and heal and progress forward on this because there’s so many good things that I’ve been able to do physically, to be able to hit the golf ball and practice and do everything in a standstill,’ Woods said of the issue back on Dec. 18. ‘But I haven’t been able to get from point A to point B, and obviously going to work on this.’

Woods did compete at the PNC Championship alongside his son Charlie in December but admitted that in doing so, he was ignoring medical advice to rest.

Last year, as well as his 47th place at Augusta, Woods made the cut at the PGA Championship but withdrew in the third round.

He missed the cut at the British Open, his last event at St Andrews.

Woods has said before that his aim now is to play major championships and a few other tournaments around them.

He said at the Hero World Challenge in 2022: ‘The goal is to play just the major championships and maybe one or two more.

‘That’s it. I mean, that’s physically that’s all I can do. I told you that, guys, you know, the beginning of this year, too.

‘I don’t have much left in this leg, so gear up for the biggest ones and hopefully, you know, lightning catches in a bottle and I’m up there in contention with a chance to win and hopefully I remember how to do that.

‘I didn’t expect to play three majors this year (2022). We were hoping for just the British Open, but I was able to get two more in there, so that was a big positive.’
