Masters champion Scottie Scheffler has opened up on an ‘weird little injury’ that stopped him from being in top form at The Open.
The world No. 1 finished well down the leaderboard at St. Andrews in July, tied in 21st place, and now he’s revealed an explanation as to why he was not in the mix at the British Major.
Scheffler was suffering from an ‘excruciatingly painful’ injury that meant swinging a golf club was just not easy.

‘You know, I really wasn’t playing bad. I played good at the Open,’ he told Golf.com.
‘I had kind of a weird little injury thing that prevented me from playing my best on Saturday and Sunday, and then I was — if not for that, I would have felt like I had a really good chance to win the tournament.
‘Probably TMI (too much information), but I had what’s called a pilonidal infection.

‘It’s an infection at the top of your butt crack. You can look it up. It was really hard for me to bend down.
‘It was really hard for me to make a swing on Sunday. Walking was actually extremely difficult.
‘I don’t know if any of you have ever had something like that, but if you talk to someone that does, it is excruciatingly painful. It was brutal. It’s one of those things that just happens.’
A pilonidal infection is typically an abnormal cyst at the tailbone which can either be drained or operated on to remove.
Scheffler seems to have recovered from his setback as he started with a two-shot lead at the Tour Championship Thursday as the No. 1 seed in the FedEx Cup.
He led by as many as six shots on the front nine. Then his lead was down to two. And when he finished with three straight birdies for a 5-under 65, he was five strokes ahead of Xander Schauffele.
