CONI Chief Giovanni Malagò feels Serie A will be weakened without the Growth Decree: ‘We’ll realise it in one or two years.’

The Italian Government has decided to scrap the Growth Decree, meaning Serie A clubs will no longer get financial aid when signing players from abroad.

Serie A clubs would save 50% from the gross salaries of players joining from foreign clubs, but the rule is no longer valid from this month.

“I disagree with the decision to scrap the rule. We are talking about 50 athletes who are of international value in 90% of cases,” Malagò told Radio Anch’io Lo Sport on Monday morning.

“It should have been corrected, but not cancelled as, by doing so, the heritage and quality of our championship are weakened. There is a lot of demagoguery; we will realise it in one or two years, even if our country often manages to bring out unexpected virtues.

“Basketball will be affected too. We have a very interesting league, and Bologna is collecting interesting results in the Euroleague,” Malagò concluded.
