Ian Poulter slams Ryder Cup Europe after they failed to wish him or Sergio Garcia happy birthday in shades of Yaya Toure’s infamous cake saga… before LIV Golf hilariously rush out their own tweet minutes later!
- Poulter tweeted his annoyance that Ryder Cup Europe had snubbed his big day
- He pointed out that his 47th birthday and Sergio Garcia’s 43rd had been missed
- Both are Ryder Cup legends but defected to the rebel LIV Golf tour last year
- LIV Golf’s official account posted birthday wishes to Poulter shortly afterwards
- But there was little sympathy for Poulter from his fellow golf professionals
Ian Poulter was left upset after Ryder Cup Europe failed to wish either him or Sergio Garcia a happy birthday as he hit out at the snub on social media.
Garcia celebrated his 43rd birthday on Monday, while Poulter turned 47 on Tuesday, but neither received a note of congratulations despite being Ryder Cup legends.
Hilariously, the controversial LIV Golf League they both defected to last year then rushed out a Happy Birthday tweet to Poulter 16 minutes after he made his complaint at 9.34pm on Tuesday evening.

The Ryder Cup legend tweeted that they failed to mark his or Sergio Garcia’s birthdays
The LIV account had remembered Garcia’s birthday the previous day.
Replying to a video the Ryder Cup Europe account posted of Francesco Molinari playing an ‘incredible touch’ at the 2018 event, Poulter wrote: ‘What’s really an ‘incredible touch’ is the Players that helped build the @RyderCupEurope Brand with other players as well.
‘You just can’t bring yourself to say a simple Happy Birthday. @TheSergioGarcia B’day yesterday. Unfortunately this says so much.’
Both Poulter and Garcia controversially joined the breakaway LIV Golf tour last year, earning bans from the PGA Tour.

Garcia, one of Europe’s most successful Ryder Cup players, also resigned his membership of the European Tour, effectively bringing down the curtain on his time in the event.
Poulter’s indignation has echoes of Manchester City footballer Yaya Toure – or more specifically his agent Dimitri Seluk – getting upset the club didn’t mark his 31st birthday in 2014.
Toure later tried to pin the blame on Seluk, saying people would mock him by asking ‘you want cake?’

Poulter didn’t gain a lot of sympathy from his fellow professionals. English golfer Eddie Pepperell tweeted a clip of David Brent from The Office.
Lee Westwood, who turns 50 in April, replied: ‘Just FYI… I’m of an age where I don’t want reminding that another birthday has come and gone! #birthdaygate.’
