Iga Swiatek wins her 31st consecutive match as she cruises through to the fourth round of the French Open after overcoming Danka Kovinic in straight sets… with the Polish star on her longest unbeaten run in nine years

Iga Swiatek came through her toughest test yet at the French Open, but the Polish world No 1 has still to drop a set.

Swiatek was asked a few questions by Danka Kovinic of Monenegro, the world No 95, before coming through their third round battle 6-3 7-5.

It extended the 2020 champion’s winning streak to 31 matches and sets up a last-16 showdown with Chinese world No 74 Zheng Qinwen.

Swiatek had only dropped four games in her first two matches but found Kovinic a far sterner proposition.

‘She did a good job,’ said the 20 year-old. ‘I wanted to play aggressively but sometimes I got ahead of myself.’

Wildcard Leolia Jeanjean’s run at Roland Garros is over as the French outsider was beaten 6-1 6-4 by Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu. Jeanjean, ranked 227th in the world, became the first wildcard this century to make the last 32 after shocking eighth seed Karolina Pliskova in the previous round.

When Ash Barty (above) retired in March, Swiatek replaced her at No. 1 in the WTA rankings

In the men’s section, second seed Daniil Medvedev is also yet to drop a set after cruising into round four with a 6-2 6-4 6-2 triumph over Miomir Kecmanovic.

The Russian faces Marin Cilic in the last 16 after the Croatian thrashed Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-0 6-3 6-2.

Britain’s Joe Salisbury and partner Rajeev Ram, the top seeds, beat Maxime Cressy and Feliciano Lopez 7-5 6-4 to make it through to the men’s doubles quarter-finals.
