England spoil Murray brothers’ Christmas party by easing to win in the Battle of the Brits challenge

England’s tennis players spoiled the Christmas party of the Murray brothers when they eased to victory in the Battle of the Brits challenge.

Potentially the last time that Jamie, 36, and Andy, 35, will play doubles together in Scotland was reduced to a dead rubber after Paul Jubb defeated Aidan McHugh 6-2, 6-2 to give England an unassailable 8-1 lead.

If this was to be Andy Murray’s last appearance in Scotland, then at least it ended on a positive note, as he and Jamie saw off Dan Evans and world No 1 Neal Skupski 6-3, 6-4 in the late match before another enthusiastic capacity crowd in Aberdeen.

Earlier on in the singles, the former Wimbledon champion went down narrowly to GB No 2 Evans — after Jubb and Skupski had clinched the day’s opening doubles — losing 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 to his Davis Cup colleague.

Whether or not this was the brothers’ last event together north of the border, Murray would not rule out them teaming up again before his body finally succumbs to the passage of time.

‘When I had the hip injury and wasn’t able to play singles, that was something we looked at, playing some doubles for a year or some major events together,’ said the younger sibling.

‘Whether it happens in the future, I don’t know. We have both got families and it would have to be something that we both really wanted to do.

‘We have had some great moments together, unbelievable memories, and it was nice getting to do it again in a great atmosphere.’
