The Boston Celtics have managed to have five players on their roster featured in the HoopsHype 2022-23 NBA season trade value rankings, our sister site’s fourth such endeavor to date.
Put together by a panel of HoopsHype staff who voted on the players included on the top-100 trade value list. A number of factors went into their weighing players against one another, including age, availability, positional scarcity, salary, and anticipated next contract. And while beyond the scope of this report, the panel will reportedly constantly update the rankings throughout the season based on new deals, performance, and health among other factors.
Let’s see where which Celtics fell — and the reasoning the panel used to put them there.
No. 98 – Malcolm Brogdon

“Brogdon’s injury history has likely dried the market for him, which played in Boston’s favor,” writes Hoops Hype.
“He’s been great for them off the bench providing a burst of offense and an element of driving to the rim.”
No. 78 – Robert Williams III

“Williams’ value is intriguing to gauge,” suggests H/H. “On one hand, he’s been invaluable for the Celtics in their Finals run and will to earn just over the mid-level exception.”
“At the same time, his availability has been poor, and he’s missed time at the worst possible stretches.”
No. 64 – Marcus Smart

“Smart is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year who helped lead a historically great to defense to the Finals,” notes H/H.
“Their defense hasn’t been at that level to start the season but they should get a lot better with the eventual return of Robert Williams III.”
No. 14 – Jaylen Brown

“Brown is one the best secondary stars in the league and still has room to potentially become a great No. 1 option,” suggests H/H.
“He’s on track not only to command maximum contract offers league-wide but could also qualify for a supermax extension should he earn All-NBA honors this coming season.”
No. 4 – Jayson Tatum

“Tatum is having his best start to a regular season averaging 31.2 points per game on 65% true shooting,” related H/H.
“The Celtics are off to a strong start to the season thanks to his play on the court and his leadership through an unexpected coaching change.”
