Preview

Defending champion Alcaraz has enjoyed a good run to the US Open semi-finals so far.

The Spaniard defeated the likes of Dominik Koepfer, Lloyd Harris, Dan Evans and Matteo Arnaldi to reach the quarter-finals.

Alcaraz’s toughest test would come in the last eight stage when he faced No. 12 ranked Alexander Zverev.

Zverev reached the US Open final in 2020. The German came into the clash with Alcaraz off the back of a five-set thriller against Jannik Sinner.

However, the match between Zverev and Sinner was marred by a racial slur made against the German No 12 seed.

In the quarter-final showdown between Alcaraz and Zverev, the Spaniard was the first to face break points in the opening set, but would go on to save both of them for a hold to make it 4-3.

He then broke Zverev’s serve in the following game to go 5-3 up and then served out the set in comfortable fashion.

The 20-year-old was dominant in the second set, breaking his opponent’s serve twice to win it.

As for the No. 3 seed, Medvedev defeated Attila Balazs, Christopher O’Connell, Sebastian Baez and Alex de Minaur before facing Andrey Rublev in the last eight.

Medvedev lost the opening three games of the match as Rublev flew out of the blocks. The world No. 8 won the first eight points and 14 out of the first 15. But Medvedev quickly grew into the match, winning the first two sets amid some punishing rallies inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Rublev led by a break in the third but was pegged back again, and in a 15-minute final game, Medvedev converted match point at the fifth attempt to wrap up the game in straight sets (6-4, 6-3, 6-4).
