With Fikayo Tomori limping off, it means 21 out of the total 27 players in the Milan squad sustained an injury this season and they now have no fit centre-backs.

The England international was one of the few who had managed to avoid the treatment table this term and consequently was playing round the clock.

That may well have contributed to the setback, as he pulled up clutching the flexor in his thigh during the 2-2 draw with Salernitana at the Stadio Arechi.

Tomori is the 21st different player out of 27 in the squad to have suffered an injury this season, the vast majority of them muscular in nature.

Of the six players who avoided damage so far, only Tijjani Reijnders and Olivier Giroud are really first-choice options.

Coach Stefano Pioli’s training techniques have raised questions, as this was the 30th different injury that a Milan player has sustained this season, 22 of them muscular, including of course several relapses.

The worst crisis is in defence, because Simon Kjaer went off at half-time against Salernitana, meaning there are no fit senior centre-backs at Pioli’s disposal.

They finished the match with Theo Hernandez and teenager Jan-Carlo Simic in central defence.

Malick Thiaw, Pierre Kalulu and Mattia Caldara are long-term absentees, while Marco Pellegrino is recovering from injury.

The only good news is that reportedly Kjaer simply felt dizzy after a knock to the head and does not have anything serious.
