Nike’s Shox R4 “White/Metallic Silver” Returns

The Nike Shox R4 has seen more popular days, but it’s quietly maintained a presence in the ever-expanding sneaker scene.

Rooted in a big bold bet from around the turn of the century, the silhouette promised to offer athletes another cushioning alternative to plain-old foam and familiar (albeit game-changing) Air Max technology. Pistons at the rear foot would load up depending on the amount of force placed into them, propelling the wearer up. Although Nike Shox’s performance reliability has been widely the center of criticism since its earliest days, the spring-reminiscent solution took over inner cities across North America. Vince Carter’s co-sign also helped sell Shox within the realm of basketball.

In recent years, models like the Shox R4 have been celebrated for their retrofuristic aesthetic. The design has had a stronghold in places like Brazil, and has infiltrated the United Kingdom and Europe-at-large. Martine Rose reworked the silhouette in a way only she could, transforming it into a mule with an extended forefoot. While inherently bold, the collaboration’s use of vibrant gradients also delivered an eye-catching spin, dividing audiences everywhere. The project played into football (soccer) culture, further driving home the connection with places like Brazil. By comparison, a newly-surfaced “White/Metallic Silver” Shox R4 keeps things simple. Its two-tone arrangement, however, firmly harkens back to the past, while offering a breath of fresh air today. “Max Orange” flair interrupts the unassuming color scheme, serving as another nod to Nike heritage.

Firm nike.com launch details are yet to be disclosed by the brand, but that’s likely to change soon. The women’s pair is popping up at retailers overseas, which means a stateside release should follow in the next few months. In the meantime, enjoy detailed photos of the shoes ahead.
