As revealed by MailOnline on Tuesday, Toure travelled to St George’s Park to work with head coach Lee Carsley and his team as he continues his education. His former team-mate Joleon Lescott is also an England Under 21 coach.

Yaya Toure currently has a role working in Tottenham’s academy with the Under-16s

Toure’s presence at the national football centre provided the players with an opportunity to tap into his vast top-level experience.

Toure won three Premier League titles with City plus two La Liga crowns and a Champions League with Barcelona.

Speaking after training, City defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis — on loan at Burnley — said: ‘I didn’t know he was going to be here so when I first saw him it was a bit of a shock. Obviously he’s a big legend at City and I’ve grown up watching him so it’s surreal seeing him in the flesh.’

Carsley said: ‘He’s (Toure) just come to watch a couple of sessions. We were asked if it’s something he could do. He is starting his journey and is working with Spurs Under 16s.

‘He knows Joleon well and has the connection with (technical director) John McDermott so it’s a good chance for him. It’s always good to have players like that around our players — inspirations who have been there and done it.’

Carsley has welcomed back Conor Gallagher into the fold and insisted that the Chelsea midfielder has the correct temperament to drop down from the seniors without fuss ahead of Thursday’s friendly in Italy.

‘He’s been excellent,’ added Carsley. ‘We’ve been lucky in that respect that, the communication from Gareth (Southgate) makes it so much easier if they have to come back.

‘Conor’s in a position where he probably needs some minutes.

‘It’s great to have him back, he’s a good kid.’
