Murray was making his first appearance at Wimbledon this year and prompted comparisons to Nick Kyrgios for his technique.

Murray ended up winning the point and McEnroe suggested that other tennis stars will now copy his technique.

McEnroe said: ‘Nick will be loving this if he is watching it, which he will be. He’s spreading it, everyone will be doing it.’ 

One Twitter user expressed their bewilderment at Murray’s technique.

They wrote: ‘Murray doing an underarm serve?! wtf’.

Another described Murray as ‘shameless’. They wrote: ‘Murray is so shameless an underhand serve??? Really?????????’.

Like McEnroe, one Twitter user compared Murray to Kyrgios. They wrote: ‘Murray playing like his mate Krygios with the underarm serve’.

One user described Murray’s technique as being ‘the panenka of tennis’.

Murray, who has frequently struggled with injuries, is determined to progress further than last year, when he reached the third round.

Having lost the first set against Duckworth, Murray responded by by winning the next two sets.
