Top tips for keeping fit and healthy

Busy schedules, long commutes and early mornings can often get in the way of a healthier lifestyle when trying to improve your wellness. Finding the right balance between work, life and your wellbeing can often feel like an uphill struggle, that’s why we’ve put together our top tips for keeping fit.

  1. Running

Try to get out and go running 2-3 times a week. A top tip would be to not eat anything too heavy at least 2-3 hours before running as this can sometimes make you feel more sluggish on your run. We would also recommend downloading an app like Strava, so that you can track your running pace and time – and push yourself to go further and improve! That way you can set yourself goals each day and have something to work towards.

But if you’re not much of a runner, it’s also great to get out for a walk. And if you’ve got a dog, why not take your four-legged friend with you? Try to start at 5,000 steps in a day and build yourself up towards 10,000 – you’ll start to feel improved fitness levels and despite the exercise, feel like you have so much more energy throughout the day!

  1. Regular exercise

Try to keep healthy by exercising every day, not just for your physical health, but for winding down from work and the day’s stresses, you then sleep better and feel more refreshed the following day.

You can mix this up by going for an hour’s walk with a friend, a toning/weights class, or a relaxing swim (followed by a jacuzzi and steam) – reward yourself!

  1. Weight training

If you’re a bit more of an avid gym, or even HITT enthusiast – a top tip is to weight train before cardio, otherwise it uses up a lot of your energy and fatigues the muscles before their most strenuous activity.

Also, drinking a pint of water when you first wake up each morning helps you feel less hungry, more hydrated and reduces your cravings for the day.

  1. Walking

As mentioned, try to work your way up and aim for 10,000 steps per day! Having this target in mind motivates you to move and do more, whether it’s a walk after work or an exercise video at home, you can get to a point where you always try and hit this magic number.

Moving more really helps you to step up your energy levels, feel great and sleep much better at night.

  1. Solo thump

If you want to mix it up and try something a little different, why not ‘solo thump’.  It’s a bizarre form of non-contact boxing… done solo. Essentially, you’re using your arms and core in regular and repetitive movements, without any resistance or danger (to yourself or others!).

You could join a class and for just 45 minutes weekly, you can solo thump to music and have a good giggle. As bizarre as it perhaps sounds, it definitely gets your heart rate up and it’s not uncommon for you to finish the class a bit sweaty – but you always have fun and feel like you’ve achieved a good workout! boxer-cising is always a winner…

  1. Parkrun

To help keep fit, you could take part in your local Parkrun event in the morning! Parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation who arrange free, weekly 5k events worldwide. All abilities are welcome to run, jog or walk, so you can just turn up and go at a pace that suits you. The events are run by volunteers who cheer the runners on. It’s the community feel that we find so endearing!

While you’re at it, you could make it a daily priority to drink plenty of water at regular intervals, as it helps you feel more energised.

Whether you’re up bright and early, fitting in a run at midday or simply walking the dog before tea, it’s important to schedule in time for your fitness. Ideal for individuals looking for new ways to get active, our top tips work brilliantly as a tool for wellness.
