Day One of this year’s Wimbledon gets underway TODAY, with British star Emma Raducanu set to miss the tournament… but why will the 20-year-old not be involved?

Day One of this year’s Wimbledon takes place today, but British star Emma Raducanu will not be involved in the action.

The 20-year-old announced earlier this year that she will miss the famous tournament as well as the French Open later this year.

This year’s action is already well underway, with defending champion Novak Djokovic in action this afternoon.

The Serbian won his seventh Wimbledon title and fourth in a row by coming from behind to beat Nick Kyrgios at last year’s final. The Serbian won the match in four sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. The victory secured Djokovic the 21st grand slam title of his glittering career.

Why is Emma Raducanu not playing at Wimbledon this year?

Emma Raducanu has been ruled out of Wimbledon and the French Open later this year.

The British sensation was forced to undergo surgery on both her hands earlier this year. As well as surgery on both of her hands, Raducanu also needed a small procedure on her ankle – which she has had constant problems with over the years.

Raducanu took to Instagram in May to explain her reasons for taking some time away from the sport.

‘It is safe to say the last ten months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands,’ she said.

‘I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try to heal it. Unfortunately it is not enough. I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues.

‘I am disappointed to share I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it I will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle.

‘It pains me that I will miss the summer events and I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts. Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.’

Raducanu’s last appearance was at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix – where she would go on to suffer a first round defeat to Jelena Ostapenko. The defeat to the Latvian was her third consecutive loss after exits from the the Miami Open and Indian Wells earlier this year.

The Brit has struggled for form since she secured a famous win at the US Open back in 2021.
