Why is British tennis star Emma Raducanu not competing at the US Open this year?

  • British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu is set to miss the US Open this year
  • Raducanu’s last match came against Jelena Ostapenko back in April
  • She has struggled for form since she won the US Open title back in 2021

Emma Raducanu will not get the chance to pick up her second career Grand Slam at this year’s US Open.

The 20-year-old made history by becoming the first British women to win a Grand Slam in 44 years following her victory at the US Open in 2021.

She overcame Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 over a pulsating hour and 51 minutes at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The British star has since struggled for form and has not played since her defeat to Jelena Ostapenko back in April.

The British sensation was forced to undergo surgery on both her hands earlier this year. As well as surgery on both of her hands, Raducanu also needed a small procedure on her ankle – which she has had constant problems with over the years.

Raducanu took to Instagram in May to explain her reasons for taking some time away from the sport.

‘It is safe to say the last ten months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury on a bone of both hands,’ she said.

‘I tried my best to manage the pain and play through it for most of this year and end of last year by reducing practice load dramatically, missing weeks of training as well as cutting last season short to try to heal it. Unfortunately it is not enough. I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues.

‘I am disappointed to share I will be out for the next few months and while I am at it I will have another minor procedure that is due on my ankle.

‘It pains me that I will miss the summer events and I tried to downplay the issues so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you did not know the facts. Looking forward to seeing you all back out there.’

Raducanu’s last appearance was at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix – where she would go on to suffer a first round defeat to Jelena Ostapenko. The defeat to the Latvian was her third consecutive loss after exits from the the Miami Open and Indian Wells earlier this year.
