Christo Lamprecht is standing tall on his major debut – the 6ft 8ins amateur leads The Open after a superb opening round at Royal Liverpool.

The 22-year-old is in his senior year at Georgia Tech, where he is majoring in Business Administration.

The South Africa native, who was introduced to golf aged three by his father, has one eye on becoming a financial manager or advisor but he appears to have a bright future on the course, too.

On Thursday, 3,500 miles away from his Atlanta home, he shot a first-round 66 at the 151st Open Championship.

When Lamprecht finished with a birdie on 18, he was two shots clear at the top of the leaderboard, ahead of former champions Stewart Cink and Jordan Spieth.

All the more remarkable given this is his first ever major. Lamprecht carded seven birdies and only a couple of bogies at Royal Liverpool.

He picked up three shots in his first six holes and finished his round with three birdies in the final five holes, too.

Lamprecht is playing alongside Dutchman Joost Luiten and 2010 champion Louis Oosthuizen, who finished level par and three-over par, respectively.

At 6ft 8ins, he is believed to be the tallest player ever in the Georgia Tech program. And the South African has been turning heads since arriving in Atlanta.

He is a two-time All-American and out of 99 career stroke-play rounds, he has carded 70 at par or under. In fact, he is on course to beat Tech’s scoring average record.

He booked his place at Royal Liverpool by winning the Amateur Championship in June.

That earned him an invitation to the 2023 Open Championship, as well as the 2024 US Open and Masters.

Lamprecht, who enjoys fishing and hunting, enrolled at Georgia Tech in 2020. But he had spend his first few months studying remotely due to the pandemic.
