The Golden State Warriors are in the final stages of their dynasty. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green are all entering the twilight of their illustrious careers. However, Joe Lacob has made his feelings on the future of the franchise very clear.
During a recent interview with Madeline Kenney of The Mercury News, Lacob discussed his desire to see the championship-winning core retire with the Warriors franchise. Golden State recently secured the future of Draymond Green, who signed a four-year $100 million deal with the franchise, while there is optimism Klay Thompson will follow suit by signing his own extension. Curry still has three years remaining on his current four-year $215 million deal.
“We’d like Steph, Draymond and Klay to retire as Warriors,” Lacob said. “That is my goal, our goal, and I think it’s a good likelihood that’ll happen.”
The Warriors aren’t far removed from their last championship. Golden State won its fourth title in 2022, defeating the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. Unfortunately, the Warriors failed to double down on their success last season, as they fell to the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs.
New Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy has wasted no time in revamping Golden State’s roster, bringing in multiple talented veterans to raise the floor on a core that’s already known for being one of the most dominant forces in NBA history. Out went Jordan Poole, and in came Chris Paul, shortly followed by Cory Joseph and Dario Saric.
Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis will provide the youthful energy to the Warriors rotation, although they will all likely be tasked with playing a supporting role to Golden State’s veteran unit.
Curry, Thompson, and Draymond know what it takes to win, and none of them rely on athleticism for their game to be effective. As such, we will likely see a few more years of contention before Golden State’s star trio head off into the sunset, at which point Lacob and Dunleavy will have a monster rebuilding job on their hands.
