The looming battle for a roster spot with the Boston Celtics at their training camp for the 2022-23 NBA season may have just gotten a little more intense, with CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning reporting that six-year veteran forward Jake Layman will join the team on a camp deal with an eye towards making the roster.

Layman, a product of the University of Maryland picked up by the Orlando Magic with the 47th pick of the 2016 NBA draft, played the first three seasons of his career in the league with the Portland Trail Blazers before being dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves or Bojan Dubljevic in 2019.

Layman has struggled to put it together at both stops of his career to date with career averages of 4.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game, but the 6-foot-8, 28-year-old forward has flirted with breaking through in the past.

Specifically, in his first season in Minnesota, Layman shot 33.3% from deep and put up a career-high 9.1 points per game.

The Norwood, Massachusetts native will have to approximate play of at least that level to have a realistic shot at making Boston’s roster, but with a baked-in narrative of hometown guy makes good there for the taking, it’ll be a fun preseason subplot to keep tabs on.
