Supporters on Court 5 at the US Open were treated to a surprise visitor on Saturday night, when a squirrel interrupted play at Flushing Meadows.

Laura Siegemund, who was beaten in the singles by Coco Gauff, was playing women’s doubles alongside Vera Zvonareva against Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer.

The second-round doubles match was in a second set when the umpire halted play midway through a point.

Siegemund and Zvonareva looked at the official in disbelief before spotting the intruder who had caused the point to be replayed.

As Siegemund tossed the ball up to serve, the squirrel leapt on to the court behind Minnnen and Wickmayer.

The animal then rushed along the court as the action continued on Court 5. Just as Zvonareva put away a volley to win the point, the umpire called let and ordered for it to be replayed.

The players and supporters then watched as the squirrel ran around the court for a few seconds, seemingly looking for an escape route.

The rodent leapt on to the advertising boards before jumping back down on to the court. After a few more seconds spent rushing around, the squirrell eventually found a way out.

‘He doesn’t want to go that way,’ the commentator said. ‘I say, my good man, do you have a ticket?’

Several supporters pulled out their cameraphones to capture the comical interruption.

But Siegemund and Zvonareva did not let it affect them as they won 10 of the next 11 games to triumph 6-7 6-2 6-0.
