The USA’s hopes of having an American man win the French Open came crashing down Saturday after Frances Tiafoe was defeated by Alexander Zverev following the exits of No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz and Marcos Giron.

With Tiafoe remaining the only American man left standing Saturday afternoon, he was hoping to fly the Sat-Spangled Banner all the way to the final after bowing out in the second round of the French Open last year.

However, he crashed out to the German in a tight four-set contest on Court Philippe-Chartrier.

The American managed to take the first set 6-3 but Zverev ultimately got the better of him, winning the next three, 7-6 (3), 6-1, 7-6 (5). Zverev next meets No. 28 Grigor Dimitrov.

Earlier, Fritz was defeated by Argentine Francisco Cerundolo on Saturday in the third round, losing in four sets.
