U.S. Open hopeful Nick Kyrgios admits to throwing matches after Boston Celtics suffer tough losses 

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has admitted to throwing tennis matches after his favorite basketball team the Boston Celtics lost games. 

Kyrgios made the stunning omission during a profile Sport Illustrated was doing on him in anticipation of the upcoming U.S. Open.

‘I’ve literally thrown tennis matches if they’ve lost in like, double overtime,’ he said.

‘If someone plays me and they know the Celtics have lost, that’s their chance. That is for sure your best chance [to beat me], to play me on that day.’ 

Kyrgios has been seen on many occasions warming up in Celtics jerseys before matches and his twitter bio even includes a shoutout to the team. 

He has been known to be emotional both on and off the courts  but it would still be a surprise for Kyrgios not to give his all in a match, even if he is already feeling bummed about a Celtics loss.

Thankfully for Kyrgios, and perhaps unluckily for his opponents the Celtics will still have about a month left in their offseason when the U.S. Open begins next week.

The exclusions of top stars like Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, along with Rafael Nadal coming back from an abdominal injury, means Kyrgios has a great chance to win his first major at this year’s tournament in New York.

Whether he keeps his emotions in check in order to successfully do so will be a bigger question.
