The Philadelphia 76ers were coming off an impressive win at home over the Phoenix Suns and they were looking to build a bit of a winning streak when they invaded the State Farm Arena on Thursday to take on the Atlanta Hawks.

In what was a defensive struggle all night long, it was the Hawks who came away with a 104-95 win at home. Trae Young led Atlanta with 26 points and seven assists to help Atlanta overcome Joel Embiid who had 26 and 13 boards to lead Philadelphia on the night. The Hawks went on a big 25-11 run to end the third when the game was tied at 55 to take control of this one.

The second unit does deserve some credit for not giving in and making it a game late allowing the Sixers to send their starters back out there down just eight, but it wasn’t enough.

Tobias Harris had 12 points on 5-for-15 shooting, Tyrese Maxey added 15 points on 5-for-17 shooting and five assists, and Georges Niang had nine points while De’Anthony Melton had five and 10 rebounds. Shake Milton pulled down seven rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the loss on the road:

Tyrese Maxey: C-

After missing his first three shots, Maxey was able to get into the paint and finish a tough floater. However, it was yet another tough night shooting the ball for him. One can see, though, that Maxey needs to start getting some calls from the officials. There were quite a few times when he was bumped going to the basket and didn’t get the benefit of the whistle. He does get points for contributing in other ways with his passing and his rebounding, but Philadelphia really needs his scoring. He did seem to get some shots to fall late so maybe that can be a positive he can take.

De’Anthony Melton: C

It was a tough offensive night for Melton, but he made an impact on the defensive end getting into and bothering Dejounte Murray. He continues to prove his worth to this team on the defensive end despite his offense being up and down. He also gets points for his work on the glass as he helped Philadelphia in that way.

Tobias Harris: C-

This was a weird game for Harris. The normally efficient scorer was missing a lot of easy looks including ones at the basket, but he wasn’t the only one. Both teams really had a tough time getting into any type of groove on the offensive end. On the positive side, his work on the defensive end was helpful. Still, it would have been helpful for the Sixers to have Harris finish a few of those easy looks in the paint. It was just one of those nights.

PJ Tucker: C

After being listed as questionable for this one, Tucker did knock down his patented corner triple in the early going. He also was a part of an overall solid defensive unit in order to stay in the game despite their struggles on the offensive end in this one. His shooting threat in the corner helped space the floor on the offensive end.

Joel Embiid: A-

In what was an overall tough night for the Sixers, Embiid was the only one who seemed to be in rhythm. He made an impact on both ends and he was making life tough for the Young-Clint Capela pick-and-roll as the Hawks had a tough time figuring it out. Then, of course, he was tough to stop on the offensive end as well which caused a lot of problems for Atlanta. He was the only real positive for the Sixers on this night. Just for context, he was a plus-12 through three quarters and Atlanta was up 14 points after three. The team struggled with him off the floor. He had a few bad turnovers in the fourth as Atlanta began pulling away.

Georges Niang: C

On a night where both teams had a tough time getting shots to fall, Niang made a few solid plays on the defensive end against John Collins even. He did have a nice drive to the basket for a layup in the third quarter looking to spark Philadelphia’s offense, but the Sixers needed his shooting in this one and it wasn’t there.

Danuel House Jr.: C+

In his return from a 2-game absence due to a non-COVID illness, House Jr. finished a tough And-1 in his initial stint and he knocked down a corner triple. He was also able to make a few nice defensive plays. He did play for long stretches, too as it appears that his wind is intact despite dealing with the flu.

Shake Milton: C

Give Milton a lot of credit for attacking the glass. He stuck his nose in the paint and he was not afraid to make a play amongst the trees. He also had a nifty move along the baseline for a smooth bucket in the second quarter.

Paul Reed: F

The young big man had a tough time in his initial stint. He picked up two fouls in the final minute of the opening quarter and the Sixers weren’t able to run any smooth offense with him out there. His run to end the third quarter did not produce any positive results either as it was just an overall bad night for Reed. He was a minus-19 in his first five minutes of play before garbage time.

Matisse Thybulle: Incomplete

The defensive stud did not make much of an impact in his initial run out there. He then did not receive a real second chance after halftime which was peculiar. Maybe Philadelphia could have switched to a zone and have Thybulle wreak havoc out there in the passing lanes. He showed that when the second unit was playing with energy and heart late in garbage time.

Montrezl Harrell: Incomplete

Harrell scored eight points late in garbage time and he gave the Sixers a spark. He energy and hustle were welcomed and when Reed was struggling as bad as he was in this one, coach Doc Rivers probably should have given time to Harrell.
