Jamie Redknapp: Newcastle are ‘VERY tired and leggy’

Jamie Redknapp wants to see more from Newcastle in the second half.

He said: ‘I think the way that Tottenham have played there is exceptional.

‘Newcastle [are] very tired, very leggy.’

Half-time headache for Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe is going to have to inspire a complete change of mindset in Newcastle.

They started strongly and could have gone ahead through Alexander Isak, but they have been sloppy in possession and have dropped off often, allowing Son Heung-Min and Brennan Johnson too much space.

Son shines as Trippier wilts

I don’t envy Kieran Trippier having to defend against one of world football’s best forwards, but he’s going to have to step up his game in the second half and needs help from his team-mates.

Son is having a magic game today and has beat Newcastle’s right-back with the same trick for both goals.

HALF-TIME: Tottenham 2-0 Newcastle

A busy day for Martin Dubravka

Nobody said replacing Nick Pope would be easy, but he’s going to have to get used to it.

Spurs have had 11 shots so far, including five on target.

Newcastle corner

Kieran Trippier swings in a cross from the right but it’s over the top of most and Jamaal Lascelles doesn’t react quickly enough. Spurs head away.

Playground header from Richarlison

He got on the scoresheet minutes ago but messed up there!

Richarlison just couldn’t position himself right as the ball floated near his head from a few yards out, and instead of powering home, he flimsily nods the ball wide.

Brennan Johnson goes close!

Johnson is having a good game on the right and has just sent a whopping strike from range flying past the post. Martin Dubravka wouldn’t have had a chance – low and hard to his right.

Richarlison celebrates third goal of the season!

GOAL! RICHARLISON! TOTTENHAM 2-0 NEWCASTLE!

Son capitalised after Kieran Trippier messed up a header after a diagonal ball from the right.

Again, it’s Son with the step-over as he danced towards goal from the left. He picks out Richarlison in the box and boom, it’s 2-0 from point-blank range.

Vicario denies Almiron!

Anthony Gordon did so well to turn on the edge of the area and thread through Miguel Almiron, but he mistimed his run to meet the ball and dragged a tame shot towards goal. Easy save.

This is what it means to Destiny Udogie!

He doesn’t score many but he has his second goal for Spurs!

Pape Matar Sarr misses!

Ouch! That could have been 2-0.

Spurs have three men against one queueing up to meet Johnson’s cross, but Pape Matar Sarr scuffed it to the left of Martin Dubravka’s goal.

GOAL! DESTINY UDOGIE! TOTTENHAM 1-0 NEWCASTLE!

A simple tap-in for Udogie after Son does a step over to fool Kieran Trippier on the left side of the box and sends it across goal. Udogie was in the ideal position and couldn’t miss from two yards out.

Key stat: Spurs dominating the ball

Spurs have seen 73% of the ball so far but have been wasteful in the final third – alongside some dogged defending from Eddie Howe’s men!

Brennan Johnson cross finds nobody

Brennan Johnson drove a diagonal cross into Newcastle’a area from the right but nobody was there to greet a tantalising ball. Relief for the Magpies.

Another look at Isak’s miss!

Ben Davies did well to put him off but from yards out Alexander Isak should have done better.

Almiron saves header on goal-line!

Good defensive work from Almiron again as he gets in the way of Romero’s header from a corner!

Son arms Almiron in the face!

A nasty one from Son, that!

Miguel Almiron had done well to tackle Son on the edge of the area, and as the Newcastle midfielder scampered away, Son shoved his way into the picture and shoved his arm into Almiron’s face, sending him sprawling to the floor.

Isak squanders open net!

Anthony Gordon catapulted down the left flank, got near the goal-line, and squared it to Isak, but it bobbled off the attacker’s boot.

You get a split second to react but have to be doing better than that.

Bruno Guimaraes shot

Bruno received the ball on the edge of the area but swung at it wildly and it was always rising and curling away from goal. He went for power but could have taken a moment to compose himself in space.

Richarlison’s attacking adventures

Bruno Guimaraes did well to stifle Richarlison on the edge of the box there. The Tottenham man could have jinked into space but the Brazilian materialised in the nick of time.

A minute later, Richarlison blasts a shot over from the left side of the box, winning a corner after a deflection.

Anthony Gordon sloppy

Spurs have had hold of the ball in the opening exchanges, but there was a moment where Anthony Gordon intercepted on the edge of the area and had the chance to play in Alexander Isak, but it was wayward. Could have had his striker through there.

Pre-game thoughts from Ange and Eddie

Ange on how to beat Newcastle: You know, having that conviction to finish games off. So, you know, we will just sort of make sure that whatever dominance we have in the game, we convert our opportunities, and also be really diligent in the way we play a defensive setup.

Howe: I think when you look at us our best, we’re the opposite of that. And we want to be at our best today. So we want to try and impose ourselves on the game as we always try to do.

The players are out!

Signs of the cross, little jumps, high-fives with mascots… the 22 players kicking off this titanic war of the wounded are out.

What injuries?

If you’d have asked Jamaal Lascelles and Son Heung-Min in midweek if they were going to play this evening, they wouldn’t have been sure. But here they are. In the house and ready to battle.

Preparations in full swing for Tottenham

A big day for Ange Postecoglou

He might have won three Manager of the Month awards, but Ange Postecoglou is now winless in five.

If Tottenham lose today, they will fall behind Newcastle.

It’s a battle of two wounded armies today, as both sides are missing critical players, but Postecoglou knows that he needs to reverse Spurs’ recent trend in case the top four evaporate from view.

CRAIG HOPE: Surely Newcastle can’t leave St James’ Park?

On Monday, supporters were sent a questionnaire which floated the idea of Newcastle United leaving St James’ Park. Ever since, it has been the talk of Tyneside.

As Craig Hope, there are many unique aspects to St James’ Park – not least its central location. Eddie Howe pointed out just as much, calling it the ‘heartbeat’ of the North East powerhouse city.
