TOP SPIN AT THE TEST: Jonny Bairstow is closing in on the record for the most Test centuries by an English player in a calendar year… but India remain in control of the fifth Test despite their low run rate at Edgbaston

  • Sportsmail provides the top stats after the third day of the fifth Test at Edgbaston

India remain in control of their final clash against England after reaching stumps at 125-3, despite Jonny Bairstow hitting a third century in as many Tests.

The hosts began with a first-innings lead of 132 and reduced India to 75-3 to raise hopes, but Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant combined for an unbroken partnership of 50 to leave the tourists in a commanding position.

Sportsmail‘s RICHARD GIBSON provides the key stats from the action at Edgbaston.

Jonny Bairstow struck his third hundred in as many tests as England reached 284 against India

Jonny Bairstow now has five Test hundreds in 2022. Amongst Englishmen, only Denis Compton (1947), Michael Vaughan (2002) and Joe Root (2021) – each with six – have managed more in a calendar year.

Bairstow laboured over 63 deliveries for his first 13 runs – up to the point that he had his spat with Virat Kohli. His next 87 runs, to take him to three figures, spanned just 56.

Before this match, his average against India was just 27.68. His career record contains only one inferior return — versus West Indies, he averages 25.47.

Mohammed Shami bowled the longest opening spell in Test cricket for 15 years. His 18-over marathon – punctuated by four breaks in play – was one short of compatriot Zaheer Khan’s effort of 19 in a similarly rain-hit match at Lord’s in 2007.

Jimmy Anderson drew level with Ollie Robinson at the top of England’s wicket-takers’ list in the series when Shubman Gill nicked to second slip at the start of India’s second innings. India’s Jasprit Bumrah also has 21.

India’s run rate of 2.77 was lower than any of the 14 completed Test innings here this summer. New Zealand scored at 2.8 during the first innings of defeat to England at Headingley.
