Tiger Woods reveals he ‘tries to shoo people away’ from his son, Charlie, ahead of PNC Championship

Tiger Woods has revealed he wants to protect his son, Charlie, as best he can from media attention. 

As a 15-time major winner, Woods is one of the most recognizable faces in golf and his 13-year-old son, Charlie, has already had his fair share of the limelight after competing in events alongside his dad. 

Despite the 46-year-old’s iconic career, Woods admitted it is a tougher environment for Charlie to break on to the scene in compared to when he was growing up.  

The golf icon revealed he has taken to shooing people away in order to protect Charlie.  

‘I want to protect him from all of this,’ said Woods, via Golf.com. ‘The environment. Especially this day and age. When I grew up there were no camera phones. There were no videos. I try to shoo people away. Let him be a kid.’ 

However, Woods will not be able to avoid the cameras focusing in on Charlie this week as the father-son duo tee it up at the PNC Championship. 

The pair are competing in the event, which has a 20-team field is for winners of majors or The Players Championship and a child or parent, for the third time. 

Last year, Team Woods finished second, one shot behind John Daly and his son, John Daly II, who is a collegiate golfer. 

The 36-hole event, televised by NBC, is December 17-18 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando. 

Woods and Charlie have drawn many comparisons to their swings and mannerisms while playing the PNC Championship the two previous years. 

But Woods claimed he has told Charlie to copy his friend Rory McIlroy’s swing, rather than his own. 

‘I told him, don’t copy my swing. Copy Rory’s,’ Woods said. ‘Have you ever seen Rory off balance on a shot? No. Not ever. You can swing as hard as you want on a shot, but you need to have balance.’ 

Earlier this month, Woods was asked when he thinks his son would start to outdrive him but he revealed it had already happened by a yard. 

Woods and Charlie also drew attention back in September when the golf legend caddied as his son carded a career-low 68 at the Notah Begay III Junior National Golf Championship. Woods was seen with a beaming smile as he drove the buggy alongside his son.

Woods won’t be the only golfing legend teaming up with their son this week as Annika Sorenstam will be returning to the event. 

This time the Hall of Famer will be playing with her 11-year-old son, Will McGee, who she revealed is ecstatic to compete with the likes of Woods, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. 

‘It’s insane how excited he is,’ she told Golf Channel. ‘We were there [at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club] before Thanksgiving playing and we were on the putting green and he’s like, “Mommy, in a few weeks I’ll be putting with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth,” and I mean, he’s a golf nut, he’s a golf fan, he watches everything, and for him to be part of this event and his name is in a press release with Tiger, it’s his dream. And what a dream right? And I’m just proud to be a part of it with him.’ 

Woods made his first appearance since The Open at St. Andrews in July when he teamed up with McIlroy to take on Spieth and Thomas in the latest edition of the match on Saturday. 

However, Thomas and Spieth rolled to a 3 and 2 win in 10 holes under the lights at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair.
