One of the rarest sets of golf clubs in the world was sold at auction and made a pretty profit for their previous owner.

The iron set used by Tiger Woods when he won four consecutive major championships across 2000 and 2001 – known as the ‘Tiger slam’ – were sold at auction for over $5.16 million dollars.

That makes these clubs some of the most expensive sports memorabilia pieces in the world and broke the record for the highest price paid for golf memorabilia.

This set of clubs included the Titleist 681-T forged irons from 2 iron down to pitching wedge, as well as two Titleist Vokey designed wedges in 56 and 60 degree loft.

These clubs were in the possession of Texas businessman Todd Brock, which he purchased at auction from former Titleist VP Steve Mata for just over $57,000 back in 2010.

Bidding began back in March with a starting bid of $25,000 before closing at an exact figure of $5,156,162.40.

The so-called ‘Tiger slam’ was one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of golf when Woods, then 25-years old, won four straight majors over the course of two calendar years.

It began when Tiger won the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, continued when he won that year’s Open Championship at St. Andrews and the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky, before being capped off with his win at the 2001 Masters Tournament.

The previous record for the most expensive piece of golf memorabilia was when a green jacket owned by two-time Masters winner Horton Smith was sold for over $680,000.

Currently, the shirt worn by Diego Maradona when he scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal in the quarterfinal of the 1986 World Cup has the record for most expensive overall piece of sports memorabilia when it was sold for $8.95m in May of 2022.
