Didi Hamann has slammed Thomas Tuchel’s tenure at Bayern Munich as ‘disastrous’ after Harry Kane’s new side lost 3-0 to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup.

A hat-trick from Dani Olmo extinguished Kane’s hopes of a first career trophy on his Bayern bow at the Allianz Arena on what was meant to be a jubilant day.

Kane shirts whizzed off the shelves at breakneck speed after he joined for £100million – the Bayern club shop beat their daily sales target nine hours early – but Bayern’s on-pitch performance left much to be desired.

Despite clinching the Bavarians’ 11th consecutive league title on the final day of last season, Tuchel is feeling the heat just 13 games into his reign.

They were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and German domestic cup and only just stumbled to the Bundesliga throne. The 3-0 defeat to Leipzig only compounds the pressure.

‘His record since he’s been in Munich has been disastrous. You need guidance. Two weeks ago he denied Kimmich the ability to play in the position he played in yesterday,’ he told BILD.

‘Bayern did not show unity. Leipzig were hungrier.

‘There can only be two reasons why it isn’t working. First: The team is divided within. Second: Or the team has a problem with the coach. The fact that Tuchel pilloried the team was definitely not well received there.’

Tuchel has won six, drawn two, and lost five of his matches at the helm of Germany’s biggest club.

His disappointment in his players was clear after the humiliating defeat and he even apologised to Kane.

The 30-year-old came on as a 63rd-minute replacement for Mathys Tel and wore the No 9 shirt but made little impact.

Bayern’s need for an out-and-out striker is evident despite having an embarrassment of attacking riches including Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman, Thomas Muller, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and 18-year-old starlet Tel.

Tuchel said: ‘I feel sorry for him [Kane]. We did not keep the momentum going. We did not create enough for him.

‘We don’t expect him to be the superhero. We just expect him to be who he is. A top guy, a top goalscorer and a top personality.

‘He will help us a lot. We need exactly his attitude to help us step out of the circle of repetitive performances like this. He does not need to learn from us. We need to learn from him.’

Kane’s dismal record in finals dragged on. He was a Champions League runner-up in 2019, lost two EFL Cup finals with Spurs, and lost the 2020 European Championships final with England against Italy.

Upon completing his move to the European giants, he highlighted the club’s winning culture as a factor in joining.

‘When I think of Bayern Munich I think of a club that have won a lot of trophies, good winning culture year on year so anyone who thinks of Bayern Munich will think of one of the top teams in the world,’ he said.

‘I think Bayern Munich is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I said throughout my career I want to keep improving and keep pushing myself to be the very best.

‘I think it was the right step to push myself and test myself at the very highest level so that’s why I’m here and I look forward to that challenge.’
