Alex Bass scored a 95th-minute equaliser to rescue a point for Sunderland in their U21 derby with Newcastle on Monday evening.

Bass replicated the goal Alisson scored against West Brom in 2021 by joining his team-mates in the Newcastle box and finding the back of the net with his head.

However, Bass later revealed that he had handled the ball and that he was surprised the goal stood.

Bass rose above his defender to reach Ellis Taylor’s cross first. He played the ball on to the post before scoring in the following phase.

The ball – which ricocheted off the woodwork – hit the Sunderland goalkeeper as he fell to the floor and rebounded into the back of the net.

The handful of Sunderland fans inside the stadium went mad. However speaking after the game, Bass admitted he actually ‘handballed it’.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Bass said: ‘I have to admit that I handballed it, I didn’t think it was going to be given.’

It may not have been as slick as Alisson’s goal last season, but Bass’ effort did draw similarities to that of the Liverpool keeper.

Alisson scored an incredible header during stoppage-time when Liverpool played West Bromwich Albion in 2021.

Alisson rose above his defender and timed his leap perfectly to header home Alexander-Arnold’s delivery. The goal saw Liverpool win the game 2-1.

Meanwhile, the Brazil goalkeeper became the first custodian to score in the club’s 129-year history.

Jurgen Klopp was blown away by Alisson’s goal after the game. He said: ‘The technique was absolutely insane!

Klopp added: ‘He could not have had a better moment. I did not shout stay back, I just let him run.

‘If Olivier Giroud scores a goal like that, we say it is world class and we have to say the same for Ali. If he never does it again, I’m absolutely fine with that!’.
