Stan Wawrinka loses it and screams at the umpire because his water was ‘fricking freezing’ in one of tennis’s most bizarre outbursts as he’s knocked out of the French Open

  • Wawrinka is a three-time grand slam winner and he won the 2015 Roland Garros
  • He is on the comeback trail after having surgery on his left foot
  • French wildcard  Corentin Moutet upset Wawrinka and will now face Rafa Nadal
  • IWawrinka had the mother of all tantrums because his water was too cold

Stan Wawrinka has been dumped out of the French Open by a local wildcard, but not before putting on a massive tantrum for the crowd include spitting the dummy about the temperature of the water he was being served.

The Swiss three-time grand slam winner recently had surgery on his left foot and is on the comeback trail at this year’s Roland Garros tournament, where he claimed victory in 2015. It was just his fifth tour-level match in 15 months.

However, his comeback ambitions were quickly doused by French wildcard Corentin Moutet who triumphed 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 and will now face the huge task of playing Rafa Nadal – who knocked out Aussie Jordan Thompson in the opening round.

Wawrinka’s tennis was clearly rusty and his frustrations boiled over when he was dished up ‘freezing cold’ water.

‘It is not normal at a grand slam,’ he said to the umpire.

‘Is that normal? Do you think it is normal?

‘So you call someone. It has been three changeovers, I asked you for some water that is not fricking freezing.

‘Because it is not good. You are at the French Open and you cannot get normal water! You think it is normal?’

Eurosport commentator Simon Reed had little sympathy for Wawrinka.

‘No, it is not his problem – that is the thing, Stan,’ Reed said.

‘Sorry about the language, but maybe he is looking for a fight.’

While the commentator might not have been in a forgiving mood, several fans pointed out that athletes asking for room temperature water during matches was not uncommon.

One fan tweeted: ‘He’s right. Really cold water is actually harder on the body than room temp or slightly cold water. The body has to work harder to deal with the cold.’

‘It’s not an unreasonable request players always ask for room temperature water,’ tweeted another.

Wawrinka has become known for his hair trigger and short temper on the ATP tour with a number of past blow-ups.

In 2017, Wawrinka was booed by the crowd at the Australian Open after he slammed the ball directly at Slovakian Martin Klizan’s genitals, dropping him to the ground.

‘He could have played anywhere on court, but he hit me. I stopped. I was standing. I don’t care. It’s a game. It’s sport. He hit me. It’s OK. Nothing to do. I don’t care,’ Klizan said.

That same year Wawrinka had a heated on-court altercation with French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Tsonga had a crack at Wawrinka for looking at him too long between a change of ends – and Wawrinka fired back with a range of aggressive comments, all in French.

In 2015, the Swiss was forced to retire from a match against Aussie firebrand Nick Kyrgios, but not before the controversial Australian told him ‘Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that, mate’.

It set up a history of fiery encounters between the two, including a tense match in Acapulcoin 2017. Kyrgios raged at everyone from the chair umpire to spectators and Wawrinka had enough, launching a barrage back at the Australia.

Following the match, Wawrinka admitted he was underdone coming into the tournament.

‘I started well and it was a good first set but unfortunately it was disappointing to lose,’ Wawrinka told media after the match.

‘Unfortunately this is the reality of how I play at the moment. I need training, a lot of work. I am playing well but not at the level for matches like that. This is the reality unfortunately of where I am.

‘The frustration does not come from a comparison of my past level but because I know I could have done more and that some things did not go well.’
