Dates, facility set for Sixers training camp in Charleston originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
The Sixers are a month away from taking a business trip to Charleston, South Carolina.
The Citadel announced Friday that the Sixers will hold training camp from Sept. 27 to Oct. 2 at the military college’s McAlister Field House. The facility hosts the school’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.
“We are very excited for the opportunity to host the 76ers,” athletic director Mike Capaccio said in a release. “This will be a great opportunity to show off our campus and our great city of Charleston.”
ESPN’s Marc J. Spears reported in July that Sixers head coach Doc Rivers planned to travel to Charleston.
“They’re going to Charleston, South Carolina,” Spears said, “to get away from family, to just concentrate on basketball and each other as a team, get their camaraderie. And along with basketball, Doc wants them to learn some American history. They’re probably going to go to a slave museum and learn about the Gullah culture out there in South Carolina.”
Immediately after training camp, the Sixers will play their preseason opener on Oct. 3 in Brooklyn against the Nets. They’ll begin the regular season on Oct. 18, meeting the Celtics in Boston.
The Sixers had five practices and one off day at camp last year. If Rivers follows the same blueprint, it seems safe to assume team bonding actives around Charleston will be the priority of that day off.
With the NBA working around the COVID-19 pandemic, Rivers’ first two Sixers training camps were at the team’s training complex in Camden, New Jersey. He’s traveled for camp at his prior stops, heading to Europe before the Celtics’ 2007-08 title-winning season and going to Hawaii with the Clippers.
