European fans mocked Team USA’s Patrick Cantlay over his reported refusal to wear a cap during the Ryder Cup.

Cantlay, 31, has been the only player not to don a cap under the Roman sunshine at Marco Simone this weekend.

Reports have suggested that the American is refusing to wear a hat in protest at players not being paid to play in the Ryder Cup.

Cantlay is also sitting in a separate area of the visitors’ locker room with close friend Xander Schauffele amid a split in the camp, and refused to appear at the gala dinner last week, according to Sky Sports.

And, the home fans were quick to jump on the chance to taunt the Americans amid their opponents’ reported fractured locker room.

The European crowd at Marco Simone mockingly waved their caps at Cantlay as he stood on the 10th green with partner Wyndham Clark during their Saturday afternoon fourball match against Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Cantlay was also mocked earlier in the round when he hit his first tee shot in the fourball match. European fans were heard chanting: ‘Cantlay, where’s your cap? Cantlay Cantlay where’s your cap?’

That was followed by a shout of ‘where’s your cap?’ as his ball was in the air.

The US refused to comment on the reports of Cantlay’s protest earlier on Saturday – other than to point out that he also did not do so at the last Ryder Cup in 2021.

A US team spokesperson said simply: ‘He didn’t wear a cap at Whistling Straits.’

It is widely reported that Cantlay believes players should be paid to participate in the Ryder Cup and refused to wear the team cap to demonstrate his frustration.

He did wear a cap during last year’s Presidents Cup, a PGA Tour event where players are paid.

His behavior caused a rift within Zach Johnson’s USA team room, according to Sky Sports, only compounding the Americans’ misery.

It comes as just another woe amid a disastrous start for the Americans, who trailed 9.5–2.5 after the Saturday morning foursomes.

Cantlay and Schauffele lost their foursome match against Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton 2&1 as Europe continued to open its dominant lead.
