American golf fans were left furious on Friday morning after waking up to find out Team USA had been swept 4-0 by Europe on the opening morning of the Ryder Cup.

Europe enjoyed a dominant first morning of the tournament, with each of their four pairings winning the foursomes, much to the dismay of the fans Stateside.

Taking to Twitter after waking up, one American golf fan wrote on X: ‘Team USA s****ing the bed overseas again. What a pathetic showing,’ while another added: ‘You guys need to wake the hell up!’

Another USA fan wrote that ‘not a single player showed up to play’, but added that it is ‘far from impossible’ for the team to turn it around.

One Team USA supporter complained that he had woken up ‘four hours early to watch you play hungover’, before urging Sam Burns to cut his mullet off – because it is ‘obviously not working’, and telling the players to ‘get putting lessons’.

American fans took to social media to share their dismay over Team USA’s early performance

On the course at Marco Simone in Rome, the opening American pairing of Scottie Scheffler and Burns won just one hole of the 18, losing 4&3 to Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.

In the second group, Max Homa and Brian Harman went 2 Down through two holes, but brought it back level, before being blown away from the 5th hole to the 15th, also losing 4&3.

The second two pairings – made up of Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay – put up slightly more of a fight, but also couldn’t make it as a far as the 18th tee as they both lost 2&1.

Heading into the afternoon sessions, it looked as though more of the same could have been on the way, with Europe taking early leads in all four of the groupings.
