Rajkumar Sharma, Virat Kohli’s former coach, recently expressed his surprise at seeing Suryakumar Yadav open the innings in India’s T20I series opener against West Indies on Friday.
In an interview with India News Sports, he made the implication that the management of the team must choose an ideal starting XI and stick with it as they prepare for the T20 World Cup in 2022.
It Is Time To Settle The Playing XI: Rajkumar Sharma
He advised the team to move forward with a stable roster rather than overly tinkering. They would have a better understanding of the ideal combination, according to Sharma. As Sharma said:
“It was surprising to see Suryakumar Yadav open the innings. Shreyas Iyer came at No.3 and the order wasn’t as we had expected. But maybe Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid wanted to experiment a bit.
But now it’s time to settle the team and our best XI should play more games so that we can find our best combination.”
Ishan Kishan or Rishabh Pant were anticipated to open the innings for India alongside Rohit Sharma after regular opener KL Rahul was ruled out for the West Indies T20Is. Suryakumar Yadav was elevated in the order, though.
In the game, the right-hander scored 24 runs off of 16 pitches. When you consider that India has a number of other choices for that position, the decision did surprise a lot of supporters as well.
Surya after scoring that century against England in the last T20 has struggled to get going and has found it difficult to score runs.
India defeated West Indies by a margin of 68 runs to win the first match and they have taken a 1-0 lead in the series. The next T20 is on the 1st of August, Monday.
