CHRIS HAYNES: We are talking with Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr. He’s here on behalf of Goldman Sachs Wealth Management. Look, so Bobby, look, the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant situation, we don’t know what’s going to happen. So as a player–
BOBBY PORTIS: Tricky, it’s tricky.
CHRIS HAYNES: Yeah, so as a player, I’m pretty sure you got same amount of information as everybody else regarding whatever you hear. When you look at that, what’s going on over there, what comes to mind?
BOBBY PORTIS: I think the first thing comes to mind is like, I just, me personally, I just think that it’s the Rudy Gobert trade kind of slowed it down, you know? Like–
CHRIS HAYNES: Yeah.
BOBBY PORTIS: That was a whole lot. Like that was like, what, four or five or six draft picks and four or five– that’s like nine, 10 players, bro. So I’m not trying to compare the two, but like for KD, shoot, if I’m Brooklyn, I need, I need, I need, I need it all.
CHRIS HAYNES: [LAUGHTER]
BOBBY PORTIS: You feel me? I need it all. Like I’m just saying. Like I need it all. It’s KD. At end of the day, that’s Kevin Durant. Like no matter what KD does on social media, has fun, this and that, whatever comes with it, the man is a hell of a basketball player.
CHRIS HAYNES: Yeah.
BOBBY PORTIS: Man does his thing. He’s tough to cover. Trust me, we had to play against him in the playoffs. He’s tough. Like gets to his spot. Can’t really stop him. Takes the whole team, it’s a team effort. [INAUDIBLE]
So it’s definitely a tough situation for, I guess, the Brooklyn Nets to be in, obviously, to have one of the best players in the world wanting to get traded and put them in a tough situation. Because I know they don’t really want to trade him. But at the same time, they’ve got to make just the right decision for the organization. I think that’s what the organizations always do, make the right choice for them.
CHRIS HAYNES: Well, you’re here on behalf of Goldman Sachs Wealth Management to discuss your advice that you’re giving rookies this year. You know, what you wish you knew about when you were dealing with finances coming up, wealth building, the importance of building the right team around you on and off the court. Tell me why this partnership took place and why is it so important to you?
BOBBY PORTIS: So, you know, obviously, when you first make it to the league, you don’t really understand like what you’re really getting yourself into. I’m keeping it real. Like you don’t really understand like suddenly you got a card that don’t, that don’t, like has no limit. You see a nice car or house or whatever you like, jewelry, you’re going to get it. So you don’t really understand the importance of saving money and building generational wealth.
So it’s my team at Goldman Sachs, it’s the Goldman Sachs Wealth Management team has helped me place myself in a position to build generational wealth. That’s our biggest theme. Obviously, I don’t have kids now. But one day I will. And I know that me building generational wealth for my kids’ kids is vital.
Because, obviously, you know, the harsh truth and the harsh reality behind playing a sport is like you never know when the end date is. So you want to have enough money saved up to build, to have generational wealth for your kids’ kids and for your own self to live. Because at the end of the day, you’ve got a long life to live, bro.
You don’t want to spend all your money on some stuff that really didn’t matter and some stuff that depreciates and don’t appreciate. That’s the biggest thing. And with me, man, having the right team around me has really changed my mindset a lot and has helped me grow on and off the court. And I’m just blessed and thankful for them.
