Paul Pogba will MISS France’s World Cup defence in Qatar as the Juventus star’s agent confirms fresh thigh injury suffered in training will rule him out for three weeks… handing boss Didier Deschamps a huge blow with N’Golo Kante also out

  • Paul Pogba has suffered another injury in his recovery from a knee problem
  • Didier Deschamps has warned Pogba needs to be fully fit to be selected
  • The 29-year-old midfielder underwent surgery on his right knee in September
  • France are also sweating on the fitness of centre-back Raphael Varane

Paul Pogba’s hopes of being fit for the World Cup are over after his agent confirmed he would miss the tournament in Qatar as a result of his latest injury setback.

The French midfielder is set to be out for a further three weeks with a thigh issue suffered in training, according to L’Équipe.

Pogba’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, later said the problem would keep him out of the tournament in the latest blow to France, who have already lost N’Golo Kante to injury.

‘Paul would like to resume as soon as possible but he must be patient, work hard in these difficult times and give the best of himself to be back on the field for the fans and his team as soon as possible,’ Pimenta told Telefoot.

Paul Pogba looks set to be ruled out of the World Cup after suffering another injury setback

France boss Didier Deschamps had said he will only select players who are fit for their opening World Cup match with Australia on November 22.

Pogba’s chances of making the squad had been hanging by a thread but the latest development confirms he will definitely lose his race against time.

Reports close to the Juventus star said the 29-year-old sustained a new injury while undergoing rehabilitation on an existing knee problem that has meant he has not played a competitive game for Juventus since rejoining the club in the summer.

Pogba had been ruled out for almost two months after undergoing surgery on his right knee in September.

The surgeon who performed Pogba’s operation reportedly revealed that he and the doctors had agreed a ‘necessary’ recovery time of eight weeks before the Frenchman can return to first-team training.

France manager Didier Deschamps has warned Pogba needs to be fully fit if he is to be picked

It had still been hoped he would recover in time for the start of the tournament on November 20.

Deschamps had previously warned Pogba, who returned to Juventus after an acrimonious departure from Manchester United, that he would only select the midfielder if he was fully fit and in top form.

‘He will not come just because he is a ‘framework,” the French manager said in September.

‘If he has not played before and is not in top form, it is useless. He himself does not want it.’

Deschamps has plenty of options to cover Pogba, including young talents Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga, while there are also concerns over the fitness of N’Golo Kante.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has said he is not bothered by Pogba’s participation at the World Cup as it is of no concern to the club, but expects him to be fully available for the struggling Serie ‘A’ giants by January.

Pogba suffered a series of injuries during five years at boyhood club Man United with good periods of form often interrupted by prolonged spells on the sidelines as club supporters became frustrated with his performances and attitude.

He came off injured just nine minutes in to United’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in April and did not make another appearance for the Old Trafford club.

France are also sweating on the fitness of Pogba’s former Man United team-mate Raphael Varane, who was visibly distraught as he was forced off during his side’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea last Saturday through injury.

Chelsea midfielder Kante had been ruled out of the World Cup with a hamstring problem earlier this month.

France are in Group D for the Qatar World Cup, alongside Australia, Denmark and Tunisia.
