England skipper Jos Buttler made a successful return to International Cricket by scoring 68 of 32 balls against Australia in the 1st T20I. The right-handed batter was on the England Tour of Pakistan but did not feature in a single T20I match out of 7 T20Is due to an injury.
He had an outstanding 2021 T20I World Cup where he scored 269 runs with 1 ton-career best of 101* averaging 89.67 in 6 T20Is. He is having a mediocre ICC T20 World Cup 2022 as he has managed 199 runs averaging 49.75 in 4 T20Is with 2 fifties – a best of 80*against India in the semis and 73 against Kiwis. He is England’s 2nd leading run scorer in this WC.
Alex Hales
Alex Hales is the other opener for England in the T20 WC. After his return to the national side, Alex Hales has given a good performance as an opener. He also played impressive knocks in the previous T20I series against Australia.
He has scored 211 runs averaging 52.75 in 5 T20Is in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 including knocks of 52 (vs New Zealand) and 47 (vs Sri Lanka). He scored 86* against India in the Semi-finals. He is England’s leading run-getter in this WC. His strike rate is 148.59 in this T20 WC 2022.
Following a failed drug test in 2019 that resulted in Eoin Morgan removing Alex Hales from England’s white-ball setup, he spent three years in the wilderness until being selected for the seven-match series against Pakistan. He scored 130 runs averaging 21.67 in 6 T20Is in the Pakistan tour. He also smashed a 51-ball 84 against Australia in Perth in the 1st T20I.
The selectors decided to give him a chance when regular opener Jonny Bairstow sustained an injury last month because of his superior performance in the BBL.
Phil Salt
Phil Salt replaced the injured Dawid Malan in the T20 WC semi-final match against India. Phil Salt has managed 235 runs in 12 T20Is averaging 23.5. He played all 7 T20Is against Pakistan, scoring 167 runs averaging 27.83. His career strike rate is 164.34. He wasn’t required to bat in the semis against India.
Dawid Malan scored 174 runs in 6 matches in the Pakistan series averaging 34.8. Dawid Malan smashed unbeaten 78 runs off 47 balls to help England score 209/3 in 20 overs while batting first and then the English bowlers put in impressive spells to restrict the hosts to just 142/8 to register a big 67-run win in the last-series deciding 7th T20I against Pakistan.
Dawid Malan also scored 82 in the 2nd T20I against Australia. He managed only 56 runs in 4 T20Is (3 innings) in T20 WC 2022 averaging 28 before an injury ruled him out of the semis against India. Dawid Malan picked up a groin injury in England’s final Super 12 match vs Sri Lanka. Dawid Malan is a former ICC No. 1 T20I batsman. Dawid Malan remains a doubtful starter against Pakistan in the final as he is yet to recover from a groin injury.
Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes has managed only 58 runs in 4 innings in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 averaging 19.33 besides picking 5 scalps averaging 15.8. The left-handed batsman batted at No 4 for England in the ICC 2022 T20 World Cup but he hasn’t played much T20I for a while.
Ben Stokes scored only 33 runs averaging 16.5 in 3 T20Is against Australia preceding T20 World Cup 2022. He also picked a wicket. Ben Stokes returned to cricket in Ashes 2021-22 after a six-month break due to a finger injury and mental health break. Ben Stokes had also retired from ODI cricket citing that playing in all three formats was no longer “sustainable” for him. He retired after the first of three ODI matches against South Africa at his home ground in Durham.
Liam Livingstone
Liam Livingstone is a middle-order batter for England in the T20 World Cup 2022. He has scored 54 runs in the WC averaging 27 in 4 T20Is and has also taken 3 scalps averaging 26.67. Liam Livingstone can smash runs at a high pace which enables the team to capture a lot of runs in the middle.
Liam Livingstone can also bowl some overs for the team. He didn’t bowl against Afghanistan in the team’s first T20I but scored an unbeaten 29 off 21 balls that saw England win by 5 wickets. The 29-year-old has not played since August 23 before this WC after suffering ankle ligament damage following an innocuous trip and also missed England’s final two T20s against Australia, in Canberra.
Harry Brook
Harry Brook is another middle-order batsman for England in the T20 World Cup 2022. The right-handed batsman hasn’t fired in the T20I series against Australia (13 runs averaging 6.5 in 3 T20Is-2 innings) and T20 World Cup 2022 (36 runs averaging 9 in 4 innings).
He however had a successful tour to Pakistan where he amassed 238 runs in 7 T20Is averaging 79.33 at a strike rate of 163.01 including his maiden fifty- a career-best 81*.
Moeen Ali
Moeen Ali is a spin all-rounder for England in the match against Afghanistan. The left-handed batsman is a hard-hitting batter and can help the team to get runs during death overs. The left-arm spinner can also bowl overs for the team and grab wickets.
Moeen Ali scored 142 runs in 4 innings averaging 142 in the Pakistan 7-match T20I tour. The stand-in skipper had the best batting average of 142 and 3rd highest strike rate of 159.55. Moeen Ali captained England’s T20I side in their 4-3 series win over Pakistan in the absence of the injured Jos Buttler and is a key player for the team in this T20I World Cup 2022 in Australia.
Moeen Ali has managed only 38 runs averaging 19 in 4 T20Is in this WC after scoring 54 runs averaging 27 against Australia in 3 T20Is-2 innings in the preceding series. He hasn’t picked up a wicket.
Sam Curran

But he played a key role in England’s build-up, including a nerveless display at the death to help win the first T20I against Australia. Sam Curran did his prospects no harm taking 7-2 defending 16 in the final over as England got over the line in a high-scoring opener in Perth.
Chris Woakes
Chris Woakes is another pace all-rounder for the team. Chris Woakes is a hard-hitting batsman who has batted at a strike rate of 146+ for England in T20Is so far. He returned with figures of 1/24 in 4 overs picking Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s scalp against Afghanistan.
He has picked up 5 scalps in as many matches in this T20 World Cup 2022 averaging 29.2. Earlier, he picked his career-best figures of 3/4 in the T20I series against Australia where he picked 3 scalps averaging 8.33. Against Pakistan, he played 2 T20Is and picked 4 scalps averaging 14. He had picked 7 scalps in 6 T20Is in T20 World Cup 2021 averaging 21.57.
Mark Wood
Mark Wood is another pacer for the England team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Mark Wood has the strength of pace in his bowling and he troubled the Afghan batters during the match as he picked 2/23 against the Afghans.

His recent form isn’t that great but he is a sure-shot starter in England’s XI. He hasn’t done well against Pakistan (average of 44.8) as he picked 5 scalps in 7 T20Is. He had a poor series against Australia (average of 79) picking 1 scalp in 3 T20Is and this T20 World Cup 2022 (2 scalps in 5 T20Is averaging 62.5). But his economy of 6.25 has been praiseworthy in T20 World Cup 2022.
