Novak Djokovic almost breaks down in TEARS as he gets emotional over a question about his young son and daughter after de Minaur demolition: ‘When she looks at me, I’m disarmed’

Novak Djokovic might have dismantled local hope Alex de Minaur with the clinical precision of a well-oiled machine at the Australian Open last night, but afterwards the Serbian champion showed there is a heart of gold underneath.

The 21-time grand slam winner has lifted the Australian Open trophy nine times at Melbourne Park and is well on track to make it 10 after destroying the Aussie 6-2 6-1 6-2 on Monday night.

However, there was one key difference for Djokovic this time around: the absence of wife Jelena and children Stefan and Tara.

When asked on court by Jim Courier ‘why’ he destroyed de Minaur in such clinical fashion, the champion bluntly replied: ‘Because I wanted to’.

But when the topic of his children came up, the determined, robotic exterior melted away to reveal a loving father missing his family.

‘He’s playing, he’s enjoying himself,’ Djokovic told Courier about his son Stefan.

‘The important thing is he is just loving what he is doing, whether it is tennis – whatever sport – of course as a father I want him to be active, be healthy.

‘He loves tennis, he wants to watch every single match. Whenever I am at home there is no tennis break for me because I play with every day. It is the most beautiful thing that I could ever experience in my life, being a father of wonderful two little angels.

‘Who knows maybe one day Stefan and I [can] come back here playing doubles with you guys. I still have plenty of time left ahead of me.’

It was when the subject of his daughter Tara came up, though, that Djokovic really broke down and came close to tears on the court of Rod Laver Arena.

‘She is not into tennis at all. She is into ballet, gymnastics. She’s a really cute girl,’ he said.

‘She is keeping me grounded and humble as well. She spins me around every single day, whenever she looks at me I am disarmed. Her look is the most beautiful look I have ever experienced in my entire life.’

‘I miss them very much.’

Djokovic now faces fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals after the Russian clawed his way to a five-set win over Danish teen Holger Rune.

Djokovic predicted a tough encounter against the 25-year-old Rublev, who is looking to make his first grand slam final four.

“He’s an established top 10 player for a few years and he has incredible fire-power, especially from the serve and forehand corner,” he said.

“A very explosive player, a little bit like de Minaur, so hopefully the result will be the same.”
