For the LGBTQIA+ community, becoming fully comfortable in one’s own skin is a life-long journey. Nike has been one of the biggest advocates for those with non-straight identities, releasing an annual collection called “BE TRUE” inspired by the community, for the community.
For 2023, Nike’s latest Dunk Low effort expands on that slogan with a stronger message: Be True To Your DNA. Simply put, be who you are and are meant to be — a lesson that applies to every being on the planet.
Alongside the powerful message is a standout design, one that is louder than anything we’ve seen from previous BE TRUE collection. Off the bat, an iridescent, color-changing surface with grid patterns is contrasted with a matte silver base layer. It achieves the dichotomous appeal, offering cool and calm as well as bold and beautiful. The “Be True To Your DNA” messaging exists on the tongue pull-tab (an unusual detail of the Dunk), while a groovy font spells out Nike on the heel.
