Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Japan Open just moments before he was due to take to the court for his quarter final clash with Taylor Fritz.

The Australian confirmed that a knee problem has caused him to withdraw from the tournament, explaining that he wants to look after his body with several big events approaching at the end of the year.

‘It’s the better option for my body,’ he said. ‘I have to be smart and after hitting with Thanasi today I feel that this is the best thing to do. I have a couple of tournaments at the end of the year and wanna do well there.’

Kyrgios’s exit means Fritz is given a walkover to the semi final.

The world No 20 is hoping to rack up enough ranking points to qualify for the ATP Finals at the end of the year.

Unfortunately for the Australian, the All England Club’s decision not to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at Wimbledon this year resulted in the ATP and WTA not awarding ranking points for the tournament, meaning his run to the final did not boost his place in the world rankings.
