In January, the 27-year-old underwent surgery to address the injury that ruled him out of the Australian Open, after revealing he had a tear in his lateral meniscus and a cyst that needed to be fixed.

Last week, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist lifted the lid on the brutal training regime he was going through in a bid to return to tennis.

The hard work appears to have paid off and the Australian was back on the court on Monday for the first time since January.

‘I feel like coming back and snipping people soon,’ he wrote on an Instagram clip showing him hitting practice shots.

During an emotional press conference at Melbourne Park, Kyrgios’ physiotherapist Will Maher explained a routine MRI that was done after Kyrgios suffered discomfort in his knee revealed that he has a tear in his lateral meniscus and a cyst.

‘There’s a parameniscal cyst growing in his left meniscus, which is the result of a small tear in his lateral meniscus,’ he said.

‘Even at that stage it was still worth persevering to see if we could do anything to get him back on court.’

Kyrgios initially hoped to recover in time to play at the Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami last month, but was forced to pull out of both events at the end of February.

The firebrand Australian enjoyed a superb run of form in the second half of 2022, reaching his maiden Grand Slam final only to lose to Novak Djokovic in four sets in the Wimbledon decider.

He then won the ATP 500 Citi Open in August, and reached to U.S. Open quarter-finals in September before a knee issue forced him to withdraw from the Japan Open the following month.

Kyrgios is yet to play in 2023 and has dropped to 25th in the ATP World Rankings, six places below the top-ranked Australian Alex de Minaur.

In December, Kyrgios vowed to play the French Open for the first time in six years because his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi ‘wants to see Paris’.

But the plan was put in jeopardy by his knee injury and it remains to be seen whether the Australian will be one of the entries at the Roland Garros, which gets underway on May 29.
