Nick Kyrgios has revealed the message of support he received from Stormzy before his failed attempt at Wimbledon glory earlier this month.

Kyrgios, 27, enjoyed a whirlwind journey to the sport’s showpiece event in South West London, becoming the tournament’s main attraction largely due to his wild antics on the court.

His clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas was box-office viewing and he made headlines the world over after questioning the umpire’s intelligence for refusing to default his Greek rival having fired a ball into the crowd.

And while he garnered criticism from the likes of Pat Cash and John McEnroe, Kyrgios also won a legion of fans and the Australian has revealed he received a video message from British rapper Stormzy before his final against Novak Djokovic.

In a video message, Stormzy said: ‘Nick, we’re rooting for you my boy. Come on, I’m here for you bro, yeah.’

Stormzy’s motivational message did little to inspire Kyrgios to an unlikely victory, as the Australian fell to a 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-3) defeat, handing Djokovic his 21st Grand Slam victory.

Despite falling short in his tilt at greatness, Kyrgios has received large swathes of support back home and Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt said the 27-year-old should be ‘proud’ of his effort at the All England Tennis club.

‘Deep down he’s still pretty disappointed to come so close but not win,’ Hewitt said.

‘But as I told him, he should be extremely proud of the performances over the last two weeks and throughout the whole grasscourt season.

‘Everyone knows the kind of firepower and game style that he has and what he’s capable of doing. He just has to go out there and keep believing in himself.’
