Audio of the decision to overturn the penalty awarded to Kai Havertz for Arsenal against Manchester United on Sunday has been revealed by new footage.

The new Match Officials: Mic’d Up TV programme is an initiative attempting to show fans what happens ‘behind the curtain’ as officials make decisions.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb went through both correct and incorrect calls from the weekend’s Premier League action with former player Michael Owen to explain the process which led to those decisions and increase transparency.

After watching a replay, ref Anthony Taylor overturned the decision to give Arsenal the penalty

‘At full speed as Kai Havertz goes between Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro. The penalty was given and we know that the VAR will always check every penalty situation.

‘It was a good use of VAR. The referee believed that Wan-Bissaka had tripped Havertz, but the video shows something quite different that there’s no actual contact initially.

‘Another step by Havertz, his leg goes into Wan-Bissaka. The VAR, really calm and concise, recognises all of that, thinks it’s a clear and obvious error. I agree. Recommends a review. We get to the right decision.’

Taylor had initially pointed to the spot after believing United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka had tripped Havertz.

However, VAR official Gillett surveyed the replays and adjudged that in fact the German forward’s leg had clipped Wan-Bissaka’s calf, not the other way around, and recommended Taylor go for an on-field review.

After Australian Gillett explained his thoughts, the Wythenshawe-born official concurred and cancelled the penalty decision, instead giving a drop-ball to Aaron Ramsdale.

Marcus Rashford scored the opener for Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils, before Arsenal equalised via captain Martin Odegaard.

After Alejandro Garnacho’s last-gasp ‘winner’ was correctly ruled out for offside, Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus scored in stoppage time to secure a dramatic 3-1 win for Mikel Arteta and Co.
