- Mikel Arteta criticised defender for not being vocal enough in training
- The Arsenal boss also threatened to kick four players out of one session
- Arteta chastised his players after conceding twice against Watford in March
A new clip from the Amazon Prime Arsenal: All or Nothing series has shown Mikel Arteta chastising his team in tense scenes following a game against Watford in March.
Though the Gunners ran out 3-2 winners at Vicarage Road, the newly released clips show the 40-year-old unhappy with his team’s defence performance against a club that would go on to get relegated.
Following the result, Arteta called a meeting of his defensive players to go through their performance in the game. Going through a presentation where he highlighted issues that he had uncovered in the result with his back-line, Arteta vented his frustrations openly.
Arsenal defender Ben White was singled out by Mikel Arteta for his poor communication
‘The other day we suffered, we had difficulties defensively. You agree with that? Yeah?’ Arteta asks his players.
‘So we need to understand why, okay? The first one, as a line you have to be one. We were one line, yes or no?’
In particular, the Spanish coach expressed his frustrations at Ben White, who had arrived at the club for a fee of £50million at the start of the season and had started the Watford game alongside Gabriel in the centre of the Arsenal defence.
‘Communication, coaching, were you active coaching the other day during the game?’ He added.
The documentary also highlighted Arteta’s attempts to get more out of his team.
After being forced to self-isolate, the former Everton midfielder watched hours of footage and was unhappy with certain members of his team’s performance on the training ground.
In particular, he noted four unnamed players who he believed were significantly under performing in training: ‘I had a lot of time to watch things, I watched 21 training sessions.
Arteta also spoke about four unnamed players who he believed that were failing to live up to their ability in training
‘There are a few players that train exceptionally well, there is a vast majority of players that train well and there is a group of players that they just come,’ Arteta told the squad.
‘The training session on Sunday, if I was here, four players they go out of the training session. Four! Four players after 15 minutes go.’
‘We are not training in the park, we are not in nursery, and we are not here wasting our time. Too many players laughing, and the other thing is complaining.
‘Someone gives a bad pass, complain. I give a bad pass, it’s his mistake. No. We have to raise the level and it goes for everybody.’
All or Nothing would also highlight the issues between the Arsenal boss and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang
All or Nothing also provided an insight into the manager’s fractured relationship with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who would ultimately leave Arsenal by mutual consent after being stripped of the club’s captaincy.
With rumours swirling that Aubameyang is set for a Premier League return with Chelsea, Piers Morgan vented his frustrations on Twitter over the Arsenal manager’s treatment of their former star striker.
‘He’s a poor time-keeper, big deal. Tuchel managed him superbly, Arteta chose to humiliate him & give him away – costing us Top4.’
