Micah Richards lays the blame for missing out on a huge bonus 16 years ago at the feet of a current Manchester City goalkeeper.

The 38-year-old, now playing third fiddle to Ederson behind Stefan Ortega at the Citizens, was part of Pep Guardiola’s Treble-winning side of last season, picking up a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League winners medal.

Prior to his more trophy-laden recent spell at the Etihad, the former Liverpool and Aston Villa stopper had spent time in the England set-up, winning four caps in as many years between 2007 and 2011.

However, arguably the game he is unfortunately best remembered for came in 2007, against Croatia in a clash that saw the Three Lions – led by Steve McLaren – fall short of qualification for Euro 2008.

‘We didn’t have Rio [Ferdinand] or John Terry. It was a mixed-bag team.’ began the former Man City and Aston Villa defender on The Rest Is Football.

‘[David] Beckham was on the bench as well. It was all over the place. But we thought we could get a draw.

‘That was terrible! I think my player rating after that game, at best, was a two.

‘But I blame Scott Carson. I blame him. I’m sorry. He’s at Man City now, taking all the accolades, winning the treble, medal after medal.

‘And he cost me a million quid. He cost me a million pounds sterling!

‘Not euros, not pesos, not francs… That was my bonus – get to the Euros, [have] so many appearances for England, and you get more money on your contract at Man City.’

It is a game that lingers long in the memory of England fans for all the wrong reasons, a reminder of an era of under-performance given the depth of talent that is now slowly receding from the national sporting identity with the success of the current Men’s and Women’s teams.

Led by national hero Slaven Bilic, Croatia raced into the lead after Harry Redknapp’s perennial signing Niko Kranjcar’s long range strike slipped through Carson’s grasp inexplicably on eight minutes

The visitors then made it two six minutes later after Ivica Olic drew Carson off his line, side-stepping the stopper to slide home into the open net.

England pulled one back through Frank Lampard from the spot, with Peter Crouch levelling just after the hour mark after a brilliant finish inside the box off a David Beckham cross after Carson did well to deny Olic a second and a third.

But Croatia completed the sensational win at Wembley through Mladen Petric, who fired another long range wondergoal past Carson on 77 minutes to send Croatia through to the tournament, held in Austria and Switzerland.

It is a game widely considered to be one of the darkest moment’s in England’s recent history, but came against a side stocked full of Croatian legends.

As well as goalscorers Olic and Kranjcar, the Three Lions faced a side boasting the likes of Luka Modric, Niko Kovac, Vedran Corluka, Darijo Srna and Ederson, with Ivan Rakitic entering the fray from the bench.
