Man United 2-0 West Ham – Premier League: Alejandro Garnacho doubles hosts’ lead after Rasmus Hojlund’s opener – plus Chelsea 1-3 Wolves and Bournemouth 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Alvarez lofted a perfectly weighted ball over the top which caught United completely off guard. Maguire knew nothing of it.

Bowen raced through on goal, but he takes a split-second too long, and out of nowhere Dalot appears to slide in and block his effort. Stupendous stuff.

Martinez is still limping from his knee injury. Coming off for Varane

Some concern for Martinez there, who looked to have twisted his knee.

He was overly forceful for barging Coufal off the ball and took a tumble for his sins.

Martinez walked around the perimeter of the pitch but was brought back on.

Garnacho has been like an aggressive wasp on the ball. He can’t sit still, always jinking about.

And that’s worked to his advantage. West Ham have struggled to contain him in this half. He seems to have endless ideas about which direction he wants to go in, and it’s confusing to defend against.

However, he produces a limp pass for Rahshord in the box, and Coufal intercepts. Could’ve been a good chance.

United are playing with swagger here and happy swapping the ball between themselves.

A good sign regarding Rashford – as he tried to dart through a couple of defenders, he lost the ball, but he didn’t let his head drop and was instantly hounding them for the ball again.

Maguire and Martinez look really comfortable stepping into midfield, and West Ham look content to let them advance until they hit their half. David Moyes’ side need to show more initiative here.

The scores remain as they were at Stamford Bridge and the Vitality Stadium.

Chelsea are still having the better of the ball against Wolves but are struggling to carve out chances.

Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are drawing 1-1. Would you take that if you were either side?

It’s been a mixed game for Nayef Aguerd on the left side of West Ham’s defence, but he coped with a Dalot dash there.

Dalot’s feet were whirring and he almost got past Aguerd with his pace and tricky, but a measured slide tackle from Aguerd made sure it went out for a corner.

At the other end, Emerson has another chance, but the ballw as played to him quite strongly from close range and he couldn’t get his foot to comply with his head. Scuffs it.

Garnacho cut in from the right and swung his left peg at it. It deflects off Aguerd and Fabianski can do little about it.

How much will Emerson be regretting that missed chances just a minute before? He couldn’t decide whether to shoot or pass, and eventually his indecision led to a useless shot.

Maguire has had his blushes spared there!

As he was dithering, Emerson stole the ball off him and raced through on goal, but he completely miscued his shot and blatsed it over high and wide from a few yards out.

Dalot has been bright eyed and bushy tailed this game and tried to give Fabianski a problem with a low drive from outside the area, but a deflection kills its fizz and makes it an easy gather.

United are controlling possession in these early exchanges.

West Ham get us underway after a false start.

At the second time of asking, they play it back and then punt it forward, as most teams do, ant it doesn’t work, as usual.

It looks as if Areola’s earlier collision with Fabianski has caused him issues. Obviously we don’t know yet, but it’s hard to discern any other reason why he would be coming off.

Might as well call him COLD Palmer.

A nice observation here from OptaJoe which highlights Palmer’s brilliance for his age.

He’s had his fair share of penalties, mind. But being trusted with them in the first place is a sign of Pochettino’s confidence in him. No denying he’s a big talent.

Roy Keane lavished praise on Hojlud at half-time after his clinical finish. United have had just four shots to West Ham’s 13, but their birthday boy kept his cool to make one of those matter.

‘This is what the game’s about. Love it. He goes onto his weaker side,’ he said.

‘That’s what you want from your top strikers – that moment of quality, a powerful shot.

Keane took exception with United’ defending, however.

He said: ‘They’re really open and it’s highly unlikely this game will finish 1-0.’

Half-time around the grounds and it’s Man United 1-0 West Ham, Chelsea 1-2 Wolves, and Bournemouth 1-1 Nottingham Forest.

An eventul start to the afternoon.

Ait-Nouri has put Wolves ahead as they manage to overturn their initial deficit just before half-time. He shot first-time but a deflection off Disasi took it past Petrovic.

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, Ward-Prowse just submitted his entry for worst shot of the season, bobbling a first-time hit well wide of the mark. Perhaps he should borrow Ait-Nouri’s boots. One minute added.

Ward-Prowse whips in another corner and Alvarez wins the header at the front post, but he misdirects it wide and Kudus couldn’t get the finishing touch on it.

West Ham are knocking on the door here. Will anybody answer?

West Ham have been strong in the tackle this game, and it has worked well, but Soucek is going to have to watch himself now.

Kudus made a blistering run through the middle and was himself stopped by a thunderous challenge. No love lost between these two.

It remains 1-1 between Chelsea and Wolves at At Stamford Bridge, with the Blues having had 64 per cent of the ball. They haven’t converted that into more chances, though – both teams have had five shots.

At the Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth still lead against Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Hojlund was played into acres of space around 40 yards from goal but his team-mates were offering him zilch.

He hesitated, waiting for an opportunity, but by the time Rashford had charged down the left, West Ham had set themselves and could easily intercept the Dane’s through-ball.

Man United built a direct, speedy attack there.

Fernandes carried it and found Shaw on the left flank, but as is usual with West Ham, they ran into a mass of bodies.

The Hammers are digging in and pounced on any loss control.

They go the other end, and Bowen lobs a cross in from near Onana’s left post for Kudus, but his header is limp.

Kurt Zouma is down after being marked by Hojlund in the box – maybe he got poked in the eye by accident?

Johnson unleashed a rocket of a shot from range, but Onana got across well to deny him.

Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead after 19 minutes but Cunha got the equaliser minutes later for Wolves. Could they be headed for another thriller?

Ward-Prowse whacked his free-kick into the wall after a chorus of jeers from the crowd. He sure took his time and it wasn’t worth it.

Soucek had a swing at it from the edge of the area and Maguire gets a trailing leg to it to deflect it out.

From the corner, the ball falls to Kudus on the edge of the area and he has an ambitious shot blocked, but then gets steamrolled into by Martinez. Free-kick on the edge of the box.

Dalot has been impactful coming infield from the right, starting a couple of attacks.

Garnacho gets a cross in the box but West Ham flick it away.

Just some pressure building here. Zouma clatters into Areola to whack the ball out as Rashford burst through. United corner – Rahsford subsequently gets a dipping shot off from the edge of the box and Areola made a good save.

Ben Johnson won a corner for West Ham after Casemiro blocked his cross. He’s had a bright start marauding down the right for the Hammers.

Soucek got a powerful header on it and it took a deflection off Alvarez, but Onana did really well to save.

Justin Kluivert has put Bournemouth ahead against Nottingham Forest inside the first ten minutes.

Chelsea and Wolves remain at 0-0.

Shaw played Rashford through down the left and he dinked it into the box, but it was too high and an easy claim for Areola. Hojlund is not yet Peter Crouch.

Johnson and Coufal linked up nicely on the right flank for West Ham but the latter swung a well-overhit cross and wasted the attack.

Bowen is playing in he central role up top by the looks of things. Maybe he’s more of a ball-to-feet man?

Agured tried to ping it long down the left flank to Ward-Prowse but United recovered the ball. They’ve had the better of possession so far and they’re just getting everyone comfortable on the ball.

Maguire switched play beautifully for Rashford but Zouma had him under wraps.

Manchester United get us going and retain the ball with a few passes in their half before carrying it into West Ham’s territory.

The players are out and few will have external factors on their mind as much as Marcus Rashford.

He did well to try and bury his recent controversy in midweek, but United fans will want him to follow that up with another good performance, especially against a top six rival.

Today is Harry Maguire’s first start since December 12, when United slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich and he came off with a groin injury.

(On Mainoo) ‘You can say I expected it but he is really impressive. Can he continue this progress? In a short slot between games, can he add, take another good performance? He’s doing incredibly well so I hope he can continue his process.

(On Rashford) ‘I think that was a team on the pitch from the first whistle to the final whistle. He was part of it and contributed very well and we expect the same from him.’

Okay, maybe not, but still, 15 goals this season is some going. If I was a Nottingham Forest defender, I’d be wanting a second player to mark him with me.

Could he be in the England frame for the summer?

David Moyes suggested Kalvin Phillips is starting on the bench today just because it was his ‘first game back’ against Bournemouth and ’70 minutes’ was enough. May 2022 was the last time he played back-to-back games.

Moyes said:’He can make an impact from the bench hopefully.

‘Ben Johnson has played really well for us. He’s quite adapbtale, flexible, and hopefully yuo’ll see that flexibility today.

‘It’s a big game because we want to gt back into good form and playing well.

‘Being sixth now is great but only if it comes at the end of the season.

‘We’ve played quite a lot of games and we’ve looked better [with games off]. Certainly we’re still juggling, trying to introduce Kalvin into the team as well.’

Roy Keane said he’d be ‘fuming’ if he was Phillips.

Rahem Sterling is demanding more from himself to make the cut for Gareth Southgate’s England squad after missing the last five selections.

Personally, I think Sterling has been a rare bud of hope in a scorched-earth season for Chelsea. He’s got himself on the scoresheet seven times and even managed eight assists, even when the people he’s assisting have all the accuracy of a drunken archer.

He’s in good form. Would you have him in your Euros squad?

As for Mainoo himself, well, he’s having a strorming season. What do you like about him, United fans?

‘At United, Rashford has to feel engaged with his manager. He has to believe despite any criticism, the manager has his players’ backs. Otherwise there is a problem.’

That’s according to Mail Sport columnist Danny Murphy, who thinks Ten Hag needs to act as a role model figure for Rashford.

Rashford brushed aside his recent storm – caused by a ’12-hour tequila bender’ and subsequently missing training last week – by scoring within five minutes against Wolves.

Now he has to kick on and show his long-term worth, especially after penning a bumper contract in the summer.

Jarrod Bowen knows West Ham are in for a test today but threw fans the bone they want by suggesting they would try to win rather than just aim for a draw.

‘It felt like we dropped points [in draws vs Sheffield United and Bournemouth]. But we didn’t lose a game and it felt like we picked something up from them.

‘It’s all about momentum in football.

‘Coming here is never easy, the way the crowd get behind Man United, it’s always difficult.

‘They’re at home now. We used it to our advantage at home.

‘We’ve got to dig in together, use our crowd, come here and try and get the win.’

The Blues host Wolves, who can take a lot of pride from their performance at Old Trafford, and they’ll be looking to make amends quickly and leapfrog Pochettino’s side in the table.

West Ham stunned United back in December via two (fairly) late goals from Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus. You can remind yourself of that in the video below.

Bowen in particular has been venemous this season, scoring 14 goals and setting up five. His left foot, if it is indeed a wand, is a wand of the highest order. Think Dumbledore, something like that.

The worry for West Ham is that he hasn’t found the net in four league games. In fact, the Hammers only have four goals in total in their last five games in all competitions.
