Luka applauds Dubs’ Game 1 defense for ‘great job’ vs. Mavs originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Luka Dončić had a rough start to the Western Conference finals, in large part because of how the Warriors effectively defended him. Dončić was held to 20 points on 6-of-18 shooting as the Warriors dominated the Mavericks 112-87 in Game 1.

“Great job,” Dončić said to reporters. “That’s it. That’s all I’ve got to say. They did a great job.”

Most of the credit went to Andrew Wiggins, who got the primary assignment on Dončić and made things uncomfortable for the Mavericks star all night. The Warriors threw a variety of looks at the Dončić, from zone to box-and-one, and set a physical tone right off the bat.

“They did a really good job, Wiggins picking him up full court,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said to reporters. “They were box-and-one, went zone. But they did a good job. Give them credit. Wiggins did a really good job. We understood coming into the series that we were going to see that. We’ll go back and look at the video and see what we can do better.”

Dončić said he wasn’t too surprised at the looks he saw the Warriors throw at him. He also complimented Draymond Green for organizing the Warriors’ defense.

“It’s always tough to play against him offensively,” Dončić said. “We got a couple great looks in the first half. We couldn’t convert them, so I think we’ve got to be better and play better.”

Dončić was held to just two points in the second half, as the Warriors ran away with a decisive Game 1 win. As Dončić goes, the Mavericks go, and Dallas will need its best player to be more like the superstar he was in the first two series of the NBA playoffs.

Kidd told reporters that he understands that Dončić is only 23 years old, but he believes that Dončić will rebound in Game 2.

“We believe that in that locker room,” Kidd said. “There’s not a lot to say. We knew what was going to come. We didn’t make shots. Again, he got in the paint and created some open looks for guys that normally make them. They just didn’t go down this evening.”
