‘Whenever I played in the garden with my brother, it’s either Test cricket for England or the World Cup,’ he said.

‘Being able to live those two dreams over the last couple of weeks is pretty cool. It’s obviously a very proud moment.’

The 29-year-old Livingstone appeared to have chosen the white-ball route, but insisted: ‘I certainly never lost interest in Test cricket. I guess the way cricket is at the moment, sometimes your career gets pushed down a certain path.

‘The big decision I made was to try and play a little bit more white-ball cricket and to go to an IPL instead of playing Championship cricket, and that was to get me into a World Cup squad in 2021. Thankfully that’s ended in winning a World Cup, so I’m completely happy with the decision I made.’

And Livingstone, who was scheduled to bat at No 8 and form part of a three-pronged spin attack, said he hoped he could take the spring in his step from the T20 World Cup into the Test arena.

‘I don’t think I’ll ever lose that joy,’ he said. ‘There are no negative thoughts knocking around after winning a World Cup.’
