Leeds manager Jesse Marsch claims the USMNT ‘will THRIVE on everyone expecting them to lose’ to England… but warns it will take ‘their absolute best performance’ to topple their World Cup rivals

Leeds United manger Jesse Marsch said he believes the United States Men’s National team will thrive off everyone expecting them to lose against England.

Marsch is the lone American manager in the English Premier League and currently has his side in 12th place, with only one match to go before the league pauses for the World Cup.

Despite managing an English side, the Leeds boss revealed he will be watching the Group B clash between England and the USMNT but will naturally be cheering on the Americans.

He admitted it will be a tough challenge for the US but insisted the young side could thrive under the expectation.

‘I know it will take their absolute best performance to have a chance,’ Marsch said.

‘But I think that’s one of the things that’s uniquely American is that sense of fearlessness. And we almost thrive and enjoy the moments when the things are the hardest and when everyone expects us to lose.’

Two of Marsch’s players were named to USA coach Gregg Berhalter’s 26-man roster on Wednesday.

Midfielders Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson are both set to play important roles for Berhalter in Qatar just like they have for Leeds year.

While Adams and Aaronson were both widely expected to be on the USA roster the squad did feature several surprises.

Aaronson’s position was a slight surprise as he was named to the midfield for the USA, when he has primarily been used as a winger for both Berhalter and Marsch.

‘He can do both,’ Berhalter answered, ‘Midfield… is light for us compared to the forward position, so we can see using him there as well.’

Other major surprises on the roster included the exclusion of goalkeeper Zack Steffen and the inclusion of Haji Wright at striker as opposed to Jordan Pefok or Ricardo Pepi.
