Justin Thomas missed out on the FedEx Cup playoffs in excruciating fashion during the final round of the Wyndham Championship Sunday.

The 30-year-old was No. 79 in the points standings heading into the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale.

He needed to break into the top 70 in order to make the playoffs, which begin with the St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, next week.

However, with a tied-12 finish at 11-under at the Wyndham, the American only managed to improve his standing to 71st, eight points behind Ben Griffin at No. 70.

The two-time major winner’s final round of 68 concluded in dramatic fashion on the 18th green.

From the front of the green, Thomas had around 34 yards to the pin with his third shot.

He pitched it towards the hole and, after taking three hops, the ball knocked against the bottom of the pin and was knocked out.

The ball came to rest 12 inches out from a birdie and he collapsed to the ground in disbelief.

‘It would have been a lot more incredible if it would have gone in,’ Thomas said after the round.

While his fate still wasn’t sealed immediately after his round, Thomas insisted he wouldn’t stick around at the tournament as it was out of his hands, ‘unless I dress up and try to start messing some people up.’

‘I did my part,’ Thomas said. ‘I played the best I could and I fought as hard as I could and shot the lowest I possibly could. I just have to just hope that somehow it’s good enough.’

This year marks the first time since his rookie season in 2014 that Thomas will miss the playoffs, having won the FedEx Cup in 2017.

He entered last week having missed five cuts in his last seven starts and missed the cut at all but one major this year, featuring two rounds over 80.
